The song is a meditation on how time and reality become distorted in the face of sudden loss - the feeling of helplessness as time marches on after someone dies, like the feeling of being strapped into a ferris wheel seat that you donโt want to be on, everything has โgone off the trackโ.
Codyโs son Arlo was always fixated on spinning things - fans, wheels, clocks - and learned to use a record player at age 2. He was 4 years old when Joe passed. Both Arlo and Joe would play records endlessly, listening on headphones, and the lyrics of Big Wheel also find a connection between them as one life begins and one life ends, with the vinyl record as a kind of Ouija medium between the two.

This song came to me directly from a โdreamโ I had of Joe a few days after his passing.ย In the dream he kissed me goodbye before heading to work. I wrote โReal or Magicโย debating whether it was just a lovely dream, or an astral visitation, a chance to say goodbye.
