The key to saving money on building a home is not in scrimping on cheap labor and lower quality materials. True value is earned in the proper management of risk and the efficient use of the resources available.

In short, it sucks to overpay for terrible execution. Choose your contractors wisely.

What's your plan?

Many owner-builders go into their project with excitement and determination. This is quickly followed by overwhelm and stress as construction is a complex process. Add this all into maintaining your daily lives, and this whole project can become an huge burden. Not to mention the added issues that constantly crop up during the process.
Many people go into the process with a "one step at a time" plan that ultimately drags out the process and magnifies the pain as most of your steps demand your attention NOW.
Most of this can be avoided however, if you have a solid project execution plan that you can follow. When you see large construction projects around you, you can bet there is a specific system and process that is in place that allows much of the project proceed smoothly. This allows the project team to focus on the issues and "fire drills" that happen daily.
Take some time and review what your plan is. Do you know how you are getting to the end? Do you have a clear path to complete by your deadline? Do you have all of your subs onboard? Do you have contingency?
Just like driving to a destination, you should have a plan on how to get there and when you will. Don't make the "shoot from the hip" mistake, and get a solid execution plan in place. Your mental well being and family will thank you.
