You know, those self-help posts flooding our social media feeds, talking about overcoming struggles, traumas, low self-esteem, and abusive relationships. Maybe it's just the wisdom that comes with approaching 40, but heck, I've been through it all. Well, some of it :) I’ve faced challenges, made choices (even if I can't recall all of them), and enjoyed every single moment, even if I didn't acknowledge it at the time.

I fully embrace my unique blend of experiences, quirks, and my path that diverges far rom the norm. I am a mishmash of feelings, confusions, addictions, escapism, OCDs, and a peculiar way of thinking, feeling, perceiving, and reacting.

Sometimes I consciously choose, and other times it's my subconscious at the wheel. Sometimes I am ready to learn my lessons, and other times I am not.

But you know what? I accept every bit of my unique, special personality, flaws and imperfections included.

Why? Because I respect my choices, the choices nature made, and those of my higher self. I realize this is all temporary. And beyond the tangible world, there's an indescribable, overwhelming perfection within me.

And you know what? The same goes for you.

Happy Monday πŸ€ͺ

What role does embracing anxiety play in preparing for a performance? πŸŒͺ

As I approach the performance practice stage, I find myself standing at the edge of a mental cliff. It's like looking out into the vast expanse of what lies ahead – my upcoming performance. The familiar feeling of anxiety creeps in, much like preparing to jump over a canyon. In the past, this leap often felt daunting, like jumping without wings, only to fall short.

But now, after going through the structured performance practice plan, I see stepping stones before me.

These steps guide me safely across the canyon, offering a confident path. I don't have to jump blindly and hope for the best; I know where each step takes me.

As I delve into this performance practice stage, I've learned to move my focus from the technical tasks to a more intuitive and expressive approach -

β€’ it's about forgetting the notes and allowing the music to flow through me

β€’ I want to reach a state where I listen to what unfolds, trusting my heart to guide me

β€’ it's about letting go of the need for perfection and control

By diligently following the detailed instructions of this stage, I've noticed that I can deliver an amazing performance. It satisfies my desire for recognition, achievement, inspiration, purpose, liberation, and simplicity.

This experience begins to heal past traumas and motivates me to help and support fellow pianists who've faced similar challenges.

What is the purpose of the "weeding" stage, and how does it contribute to improving one's performance? πŸ“Β

When I embark on learning a new piece, I dedicate a week to the second, learning stage, as I mentioned in my previous post. Each day, I practice for two hours, breaking the piece into blocks. I choose three different tempos for the piece and repeat each block (6-8 bars) at slow, moderate, and fast tempos.

Before moving to the next speed, I take a moment to listen to the metronome, remind myself of the correct timing, and play the music in my mind.

I only proceed to the next block when I feel comfortable in both my body and mind.

I start by practicing each block in 3 tempos, then I repeat the same process with every 2, 4, 8, 16 blocks till I get together the entire piece.

After this learning stage, I transition into the "weeding" stage, which lasts for a few days.

I practice difficult segments using a method involving sticky notes:

β€’ I play the entire piece ten times a day, and after each repetition, I place a note on the score where I made an error

β€’ these errors might include memory slips, technical uncertainties, or doubts about the music's structure. I take notes on what needs to be corrected

β€’ I work on the problems in three tempos, gradually increasing the speed as I become more comfortable

My ultimate goal in this stage is to conquer the fear of making mistakes and achieve a deeper understanding of the piece.

How do you approach learning a new piece? πŸ“–

When I approach a new piano piece, it's a different journey compared to familiar pieces. The old pieces have left their traces in my mind and muscles, making it challenging to overlay new techniques. Relearning them can be frustrating, creating a clouded sensation.

Starting a new piece involves three stages: analysis, learning, and performance practice. This one-month process builds the way for confidence and creativity on stage.

β€’ in the analysis stage, I've embraced layered practice to keep my mind clear and focused

β€’ the learning stage has taught me the importance of repetition and how it enhances muscle memory

β€’ lastly, the performance practice, often overlooked, is crucial for confidence on stage. Without it, confusion, anxiety, and poor results can follow

My journey in mastering new pieces has been a lesson in patience and the power of focused repetition.

What are some of the challenges you faced during your journey to speed up piano playing? πŸ’₯

I embarked on a journey to accelerate my piano playing. It felt like my muscles were learning to breathe in the fast tempos. Challenges came my way, but I overcame them:

β€’ stiffness in my hands was met with improved phrasing and a lighter touch

β€’ missed notes were addressed by enhancing the speed and accuracy of my elbow and torso motions

β€’ my fingers stopped feeling 'flying' or 'wooden' as I incorporated 'windmill' exercises and nail care

β€’ my fingers moved with precision and control, aided by clear intonation and focused energy

The piano keys, once intimidating, started to feel like an extension of my being.
I was mastering the art of playing with both speed and accuracy, all thanks to a systematic approach.

My mind and hands had formed a powerful partnership, and I was becoming a more skilled pianist with every practice session.

Why is it important to rest between practice sessions, and what are the advantages of short breaks? 🌟

To accelerate my playing in scales, arpeggios, octaves, and chords I maintained a gentle touch, reducing unnecessary effort and unlocking faster finger movement. I learned to take time between practicing to let new sensations settle into my muscle memory.

At first, I felt uncomfortable playing at high speeds, but with persistence, my muscles and senses adapted.

During fast tempo practice, I kept my nails short, applied orange juice to fingertips or keys, and stayed hydrated. I incorporated arm and abdomen muscle exercises to prevent strain and discomfort.

Breathing exercises and arm rotations ('windmill') helped release tension and maintained focus.

The key elements in my practice were a light touch, accurate motion in the elbow and torso, phrasing with energy amplitude, a clear sense of pulse, and the utilization of free energy from arm weight.

I avoided lifting my fingers too high, instead letting them rest on the keys.

Quality and speed were controlled through my mind's focus and sound imagination.

This journey enabled me to enhance my playing speed and master these essential techniques.
