(Agencies) : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has reignited the debate on tribal land rights, alleging that land belonging to tribals is being unjustly acquired in the name of development across the country. Resuming his 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' from Jharkhand's Khunti district, Gandhi claimed that acres of tribal land acquired by the previous BJP government in the state remained unused. Addressing a gathering during the yatra in Gumla district, Gandhi emphasized the importance of consent from Gram Sabha for land acquisition, as mandated by the UPA government's land acquisition law.
He accused the BJP of acquiring vast swathes of tribal land for land banks but failing to utilize them, prompting demands for their return. Gandhi also reiterated his pledge to remove the 50% cap on reservations, advocating for a nationwide caste census.
The yatra, covering 6,713 km across 15 states, aims to address socio-economic issues and is set to conclude in Mumbai on March 20th.
