After about two weeks of public voting on Facebook, we have our winners!

THIRD PLACE WINNER: Top Story! Weekly Says Goodbye to the iO West Stage

The iO West may have closed, but Top Story! Weekly lives on. Writer Mike Bedard perfectly encapsulated the feelings of the moment. Dozens of long-time performers, writers, and a full audience helped deliver what was the end of Top Story! Weekly's run at the iO West.

SECOND PLACE WINNER: Private Investigator Rex Chapman investigates the gun problem by Sam Kimbrell

Being a topical sketch comedy show, Top Story! Weekly has had to invent innovative ways to present complex sociopolitical issues. Breaking the fourth wall, a sprinkling of inside jokes, and representing complex ideas with comic characters and situations are some of the tricks the show has developed. In this sketch, writer Sam Kimbrell throws everything into the mix, trying every comedic trick he can think up. It's a huge range of techniques and he makes them all work and work together. The performers make sure to give the material the looseness it needs to land joke after joke. Especially noteworthy is the performance of Derek Reid who ties the whole thing together with flawless timing and performance, as is his usual.

FIRST PLACE WINNER: NASA Sun Probe is Alive by Meg Cilfone

Space exploration has sporadically inspired sketches over the years perhaps owing to the fact that one may write anything they want about a rock in space. Also true, however, is that a rock in space isn't inherently funny. Writer Meg Cilfone has come up with a truly inspired idea regarding NASA's Sun Probe Mission last summer. Some may argue that this sketch doesn't have much to do with NASA's mission, but most would say it is simply really funny. No one should be surprised that Meg Cilfone wrote a hilarious sketch since her sketches won both 1st and 2nd place last year. And now, her sketch has won first place for 2018. Calling her a talented writer is almost an insult. Meg knows comedy. To be fair, the sketch is helped by three of the best performers the show has ever had: Derek Reid, Jen Cain, and Mitchel Baldwin. Mitchel and Jen deliver perfect straight-man performances to Derek's complete ridiculousness. (BTW, Mitchel's perfect straight-man helped deliver last year's 3rd place.) And Derek proves he can be hilarious even when you can't see his face or body.
