Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth or Emancipation Day is a holiday in the United States that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Galveston, Texas in 1865. Generally, Juneteenth honors the emancipation of African (Black)-Americans throughout the United States. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

Twenty-six years ago,  was the unjust killing of Mr. Amadou Diallo.

During the final conversation with his mother Mrs. Kadiatou Diallo , Amadou  told his mother that he  had saved $9,000 for his college tuition.

“I remember his excitement on the phone,” Diallo states. “He was so happy that day. He said, ‘I am ready. I’m going to college."

23 year old unarmed West African (Guinean)-born with no criminal record, was killed by four New York City police officers who fired 41 shots at him in the doorway of his Bronx, NY apartment building on February 4,1999.
Law enforcement policies like racial profiling and stop and frisk has made it clear how externally undifferentiated one Black face is from another.

Check out this beautiful article by Julian R. Addo , honoring Black Americans: reflections on sacrifice and resilience.

"As a Liberian immigrant with ancestral ties to enslaved Africans in America, I explore the unique struggles of Black Americans and the global debt we owe to their legacy."

I can relate to this article. Being of Liberian heritage and having some ancestors who were enslaved and brought to the United States. A few left South Carolina, returned to Africa, and settled in Liberia.
