Once an engine attached to a train,
was afraid of a few drops of rain.

The pints weren't set right,
it came off with a fright,
and a hand put it back again.

On this day, 70 years ago, the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) made attempt #1 at adapting the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry's ever famous Railway Series for television. The Sad Story of Henry was the first story they would adapt.

The program was live and narrated by Julia Lang. OO scale model trains were used. The models used were 3 Mecanno Duchess of Atholl models and an N2 tank engine. All 4 models were modified to resemble the characters from the books.

The pilot was a failure. An engine went off the tracks on camera, messing up everything. A hand was seen picking up the derailed engine, throwing the illusion out of the window. Wilbert Awdry was one of the viewers disappointed with the program. On top of complaining about the jerky movement of the engines and James' inclusion in the story, he also called it "A matter of almost National Concern." The negative reception caused BBC to cancel the second episode and the entire show. Rumor has it that BBC taped over the program and is considered lost to time.

This is a really fascinating piece of lost media. I would've loved to see this. Lots of excellent and accurate reenactments of the program make me really intrigued about this program. Very ashamed the modified Meccano Duchess models and tank engine model don't exist. James is the only one that exists, so maybe we'll get pictures of Henry, Edward, and Thomas later on. Only time will tell.

Happy 70th anniversary to the 1953 version of the Sad Story of Henry!
