The week starts with a bang, as we are very happy to present to you the premiere music release by none other than Undercurrent (aka Li-Z)
She has been around in the Hardcore circuit for many years, is one of the best DJs (both technical, and in track selections), and has quite the accolades to show.
So how did Li-Z, whose job as a DJ is to spin tracks by other people to other people, happen to have a release out, with her own productions?
Well, she explains it better in her own words:
"A very experimental, one-off release that doesn’t quite fit into any genre. There are influences from Industrial, Hip-Hop, and IDM, but the result doesn’t quite fit into any of them.
These tracks were made around 10 years ago, at a time when I was still exploring music production but already realizing it wasn’t for me. I never really considered myself a producer, and after this I stopped making music altogether. Still, there’s something about these strange tunes, I think it's the 'no rules' and 'in-between-genres' energy that I like and that made me want to share them now. Maybe someone out there will connect with them in their own way."
Word!

Quite a while ago I did a tribute to Dance Ecstasy Records - Part 1.
And now, a long time later, I finally got around to do - Part 2.
The subtitle is "The Endless Summer Mix". Because, even if that might feel like sacrilege to some Die-Hard PCP Doomcore fans - the releases on DE 2001, most of the time, represented the rave, party, dance, enjoy-life-to-your-fullest side of PCP. Fitting to the end-of-summer days we are in.
And, lastly, it *is* actually an endless mix! I don't know how many DJs did pull this of before. The mix does not end. You can listen to it for days. It is a loop. Just set your player to "repeat". Because the end is already the start of the mix again (huh?... no really, just try it!)
So enjoy these dog days, check the mix, respect to Acardipane and DE 2001. And here's the tracklisting:

Yours truly was invited by Les Ombres Torturées Records to stitch together a live mix for their podcast.
And, going by the name of the label, I present to you The Tortured Shadows Department.
It's less a mix, more an audio narrative, telling a complete and dark story... and each track is a chapter in this imaginary book.
(check the track names to learn more)
Plenty of howling, laments, wailing, agony, and teeth-gnashing, transformed into synths, drums, and noise.
From Dark Ambient and Drone to Doomcore and Speedore.
Until the shadows get set free again...

Here's a brand new serving of kicking hardcore and techno drum samples.
They are free to use, you don't have to pay royalties, you don't have to credit me (see below).
All of these are related to the 909 (the drum machine that made the 90s roar). But are tweaked, distorted, run through fx... so these are not your standard gabber and techno kicks for sure.
There is a huge variety of samples: bass heavy ones, more light weight drums, weird ones, and hyper-distorted sounds.
(The focus is on the heavy ones, of course.)
Because of this, I'd say they are suitable for all electronic genres... hardcore, techno, industrial, indietronics, speedcore... you name it!
I've been a hardcore and techno producer for nearly 30 years now and i did countless releases on countless labels. For this sample pack, I isolated the drum-stems of some of these tracks, and cut them into short samples
So it's really drums that have been played loud and approved at club or squat party sound systems (and their crowds).
License: Feel free to use the bassdrums for any public, private, intimate, or commercial purpose.
Would be *very* cool if you credit me, but it's not strictly necessary.

Note: in some cases, you might need to cut off the "clicking" sound at the end of the sample in an audio editor.

What's some of the most under-rated / under-appreciated hardcore releases or track, in your opinion?

5 art projects that might have killed me
Producing media and art takes an extreme strain on body, mind, and soul.
Overly lengthy production sessions often leave me in a slightly (or more than slightly) confused or disoriented state, and this can lead to a lack of attention to possible dangers, and other issues.
Here are 5 cases where producing music (or projects) might have killed me.
Btw: no drug or substance abuse was involved in any of these. It's just that I go "all-in" with my mind when I focus on something.
As I got older I began to reflect on these, and try to do a more balanced and healthy approach to creativity.
1. Speedcore Excess (album on Speedcore Worldwide, and nomen est omen, I guess)
Was still dizzy and dazed after a 4 hour non-stop production session, so I made a traffic error on my bike and was nearly crushed by two incoming cars. In the end I just got a few bruises.
2. Slowcore Revolutions
Tried to cut my toe-nails (!) in between a production session that lasted for several hours. Accidentally cut into my flesh, and the bleeding was very hard to stop.
3. Summertime Hardcore Mixmarathon
tried to pull a bit of skin from underneath my soles, accidentally ripped it off, started to bleed, didn't treat it well, became infected, sepsis, needed to go to ER and got on antibiotics.
doctor said a little bit of rest might have done the trick, but i did not rest, because of the work on this project.
4. Slowcore Compilation part 1
Felt very strange and sick after corona vaccination, didn't go to the doctor and thought it would go away on its own, and eventually it did.
Later i realized that that not all corona complications are harmless, and it might have been dangerous and it would have been much better if i went to the doctor for it, but in my "doomcore mindset" at that time i was not able to think like this.
5. doors to the pleasures album (aka doors to heaven and hell)
got corona for real now, and felt even more sick.
did not take care of this properly, for similar reasons as above.
during my feverish nightmares, i actually had a dream where "my ancestors" were coming to me. in my dream, i asked them if this meant i was going to die, and they said: "no".
there were many, many, many more cases, but i will stop for now.
this topic might seem a bit more morbid than usual, but to my defense, some of things i listed are quite commonplace amongst the population. like the "i don't want to go to the doctor even if i'm extremely sick" mindset. i have seen completely sober, fluffy pop-loving business, academic, office clerk types with that attitude. so it doesn't take a "doomcore head" for this to happen.
either way, maybe there is something we can learn from such incidents, which is that it is important to watch and take care of one's health, both bodily and mental health. that a person should neither strain the one nor the other. and to go to the doctor and / or talk to your friends about your problems (if you have any problems, but i am sure that you do).
it could make all the difference in the world, you know?
