Big chimney demolition video going live this Sunday. It's nearly broken me, this one 🤦‍♂️😏 And still so many outdoor projects I'd like to do before the winter... #diy #chimney

Just to let you know, on Wednesday this week EWI are running a free open day in Birmingham where you can learn all about their external insulation system and how to render like a pro. I went on something very similar there and massively recommended it! Forward and share with anyone you think might be interested. #externalwallinsulation #rendering #trainingcourses

Ok, so as predicted I've been rubbish with my updates. This has been like a very long tortuous jigsaw puzzle but I'm nearly there. Highlight so far has been making the doors from an old bed frame and some 5mm ply (routed in) I had lying around, with pocket hole screws. So last big push this week - hinges to install, last bit of cabling, speaker pockets to insulate and painting and hopefully a video very soon on the entire build. I'm not splitting this up. I thought it would be a better experience to show the entire build in one video. #mediabookcase

Days 2 - 4. Conscious I owe you an update on the media bookcase build. And the truth is it's been really tricky. I thought I'd whip up the carcasses in a day and the job would be next to finished in a week but I always underestimate how long something is going to take and this one ... oof 🤦‍♂️

Things that have slowed me down:
- designing something that allows for maintenance of the under floor heating and mains water pipes
- squeezing the design into a tight space where no two angles are plumb - getting the whole thing square relative to the walls has been a challenge in itself and the final location is still guesswork
- working out where to locate the amp (which gets hot) and the other separates - I've got a load of old CDs and want an every level turntable so I can slowly build a record collection
- and then family stuff intervenes

So this is where I've got to. I suspect things will speed up next week now the basic structure is set. #mediabookcase #diy #carpentry

Day 1 - not exactly stellar progress in the main because I'm still grappling with how to design the unit around the ufh manifolds. As you can see, from the plinth divides - units 1 and 2 straddle the pump, iso valves and wiring centre. Today's plan - just crack on with it and work it out as I go.

Let the media bookcase build begin 💥📐🪚 Excited about this one. The biggest headache, now that the landing has been ripped up and cabling mostly channeled though, is going to be how to keep the TV area operating each night to keep DIYfe happy. Keep an eye out for daily updates. #diy #mediabookcase #carpentry

Now THAT is a revelation. Thought I'd use wiire mesh given how deep the damage was on this wall. Initially flicked the render (4:1) building sand to plaster - on the wall into the holes. When it was reasonably flat I screwed the mesh to the front, then kept on flicking render through the mesh. When the mesh was full I troweled the render on top. It was SO easy to tool. Let it go off a bit then ran a float over it and :boom: all done. A bag and a half of sand so there's a lot of weight on there, but no slumping.

It's not always the easiest gig doing this YouTube malarkey but feel pretty lucky to be working outside today. Rebedding some dodgy patio slabs. Video hopefully out this weekend if I can get the work and the edit done in time. Have a great weekend all (when we get to it).

Firstly thank you all for your comments on my last post - so grateful and extremely useful. Secondly apologies to any of you who were watching the resulting video when I pulled it last night. I posted it in a bit of a rush, keen to catch the end of the weekend but then when watching it back I realised I had completely missed the point in my conclusions.

A few tweaks and it'll be a much better video, and much more useful to everyone over the long term - always striving to make each video better than the last. So I think I'll probably post it this Wednesday in place of the usual Short - or possibly Friday. I'd be really interested to know when you most like videos to drop?
