happy disability pride month! sorry I'm a little late but I want to take the time out of my day to talk about my disability. this is an invisible one, meaning you can't "see" it, but it definitely impairs my abilities with communication and cognition.

I have autism. it's a neurodevelopmental disorder that makes it hard for me to communicate with other people and some environmennts. a lot of autistic people have special interests; meaning we get occupied on a hobby or topic and spend lots of time studying it and thinking about it. a lot of autistic people also struggle to read social cues, show sympathy and understand indirect communication. this makes it hard for us to feel like we belong in society, especially for low support needs people who are often late diagnosed and neither fit in with the very autistics or the allistics.

sometimes it can be really hard to talk about it, especially with kids my age, cause of the great stigmatisation and generalisations surrounding autism. it's very easy and normalised for people with disabilities in general to be made fun of and picked apart. I was late diagnosed at 14 last year because I was taught for most of my life that I needed to have intellectual disabilities to be on the spectrum. which is a lie and a lot of people are left undiagnosed for lots of their lives, thinking they don't belong anywhere because people are not willing to look past the harmful generalisations made about autism, lots of which are based on sexism, racism and classism (ie. medical diagnosis is very expensive so a lot of poor people can't afford it).

but it is 100% a disability. I have been bullied for it multiple times, people take photos of me without knowing, people point and laugh at me, make loud comments about my appearance, pester me about everything they thought was "wrong" with me. all because I happen to be different to them. and what's even more disgusting is seeing the people who act on this behaviour or validate it to go around, preaching about kindness and making everyone feel like they belong.
