SUBJECT: Platinum Rapper, Activist, Screenwriter and Former Law Enforcement Officer Jinho “Piper” Ferreira and GRAMMY-nominated Songwriter, Producer and Chairman of the Cherrytree Music Company Martin Kierszenbaum Deliver Important Message of Mentorship with their New Single ‘How to Walk Like a Man’

Dear Cherrytree Music Company subscribers and supporters:

Piper’s story is remarkable. He was the second artist ever signed to the Cherrytree Music Company (after Feist) as part of the Bay-Area group called Flipsyde who went on to sing the theme song for the Winter Olympics (“Someday”) and have a global hit with a song called “Happy Birthday” - co-written and co-produced by singer/songwriter/ producer Martin Kierszenbaum(Lady Gaga, Far East Movement) - that went top 10 in 8 countries.

As a member of Flipsyde, Piper (né Jinho Ferreira) toured with The Game and Akon performing his razor-sharp, socially potent lyrics. Yet, he became dissatisfied with, as he puts it, “just talking and not doing,” and after a close friend was killed by police, he decided to pay his own way through the local police academy. Piper ended up giving the commencement speech at his graduation ceremony and spent the next 8 years as an Alameda County Sheriff.

Working in law enforcement inside the community that raised him gave Piper the benefit of two very different and important vantage points. He has written a screenplay about these experiences that was recently accepted to the Screenwriters Lab and secured a TV deal with the Mark Gordon Company, Entertainment One and BET.

Piper and Kierszenbaum, who remained friends and regular musical collaborators throughout, would often discuss topical issues. The conversations kept coming back to mentorship. And so began Piper and Kierszenbaum’s collaboration on the song “How to Walk Like a Man” - a heartfelt letter from a father to his son:

“Dear Son,

I wrote you this letter because this world we live in ain’t too forgiving for truth tellers and it was written that if you go against the grain they wanna knock you down. That’s why I figured it’d be best to tell my story now. I saw my father once since I was in the second grade. Had to learn these lessons on my own I was self made. I been broken down, crushed, lost trying to find a way. Thought my only power’s give a life or take a life away. But wherever you focus your energy flows. So you can stress over the past or get obsessed and go. I was blessed to have a mother kept me fed and clothed. Made me read a thousand books about my worth in gold. So when the block got hot and the homies got shot and the girls started ho’ing and they running from the cops, I knew I was a prince in an enemy’s land and that’s the first lesson how to walk like a man.

The only person you gotta convince is yourself. Don’t try to argue with these idiots. It’s bad for health. And most of them worship money, so increase your wealth. Don’t ever tell them all your plans. Learn to move in stealth. And ‘Pac right, they gone hate you for whatever you do. So choose to pursue what’s truest to you. And you ain’t never been alone. Look down at the shoulders you standing on. Go and find like-minded allies that’s standing strong. I ain’t grow up with religion, but believe in something. Your body is the greatest temple. Don’t die for nothing. I know five black men college-educated dead. You got something in your heart to say, you better say it. ‘Cause time is your greatest commodity. When it’s lost, you can never get it back. Be conscious of what it cost. Find you a woman that know about more than just dropping draws. Build you a future and find you a cause. Gotta walk like a man.

When you alone on the battlefield, I’ll be riding with you. That’s for real. You gotta breathe deep and think through it, move through it get used to it. And if it’s money over everything, then you’ll be selling out for anything. You see the best thing that you can be is yourself. That’s what the world needs. Gotta walk like a man.”

“How to Walk Like a Man,” written by Piper and Martin Kierszenbaum, interpolates a portion of Rick Springfield’s “Walk Like a Man” and was produced by Martin Kierszenbaum who also plays all instruments on the track with the exception of additional guitar by Jerry Fuentes of The Last Bandoleros. GRAMMY-Award winning engineer Tony Lake mixed “How to Walk Like a Man” which is available for download and streaming now:
