Warner Bros has signed a deal for a biopic about Al Schwimmer, the American World War II veteran and founder of Israel Aerospace Industries, drawing much criticism over the figure’s ties to the violent foundation of Israel.
Schwimmer is known for smuggling military planes and weapons to the Haganah during the 1948 Nakba, aiding to forcibly displace 750,000 Palestinians. He acquired around 30 American bombers and cargo planes at discounted war surplus prices and enlisted US combat veterans to transport them abroad, operating under the cover of a fake Panamanian airline. He also smuggled over 50,000 weapons via Czechoslovakia to the Haganah, proving instrumental in helping the Israeli side win the Arab-Israeli war in 1948.
Due to his smuggling operation that violated the international arms embargo against both sides of the war, he was later convicted by the US in 1950, fined, and had his veteran benefits revoked despite never being imprisoned.
Another controversial point of the film is its screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin, known for his outspoken support for Israel in its genocidal war on Gaza which has killed nearly 44,000 Palestinians.
There is concern the controversial historical figure will be portrayed as a heroic figure, without any reference to his dark legacy and his contribution to the ongoing sufferings of Palestinians.
