Post hip op day 4, I can't make any gardening vids, but managed to escape the ministrations of Mrs. F for ten minutes to harvest some grapes and toms from the greenhouse 😀

So, I got away quite lightly from Hurricane Fiona, just my small greenhouse door blown off and the destruction of my bean tunnel.

Summer is all about fresh flavours and although it is still early Summer here in Nova Scotia, so I can’t say the carrots and tomatoes in this dish are mine, but the basil that lifted the quiche was fresh from the greenhouse, the garlic scapes( I talked about them being ready in a recent video!) and thyme were fresh from the garden and roasted in olive oil to give the carrots extra fresh flavour. I love Summer 😋 Ooh and I also sautéed a couple of the scapes whole, in olive oil to add that extra smooth garlic taste!

Apologies for my lack of videos posted for the last week or so, I have been too busy with this view 😎 Back today from Barbados to find that the garden has gone crazy, so watch out for a ton of catch up pics, missing that view though 😀

Many thanks to Bruce MacDonald from Cape Breton for sending me these Hablitzia (Caucasian Mountain Spinach) seeds. I’m looking forward to trying out this perennial veg!

I am excited to announce that I have just completed my first book called "The Optimistic Gardener - A Gardener's Journey Through Throat Cancer".
The book chronicles my cancer journey, through the shock of diagnosis, the sometimes-tortuous path of cancer treatment and how I believe the medicinal properties of gardening, both psychologically, physiologically and using that most important quality of a gardener, optimism, helped me through this painful time. I am no medical expert, and I don’t pretend to give any medical advice in this book, but I hope to give you a general idea of what you will go through in your own journey through throat cancer, even if it maybe won’t exactly match mine. I have also included some stories from my past life as a sailor in the Royal Navy. I included these stories to show how they also helped to shape the way I approached my journey. Most importantly I hope to be able to inspire you to look forward with that little bit of optimism and fortitude that the gardener needs, if they wish to come through a season in the garden, with all the trials and tricks mother nature has in store. The Ebook is available for pre-order from Amazon online and will be released on Monday 14th March as will the paperback. Your support would be greatly appreciated and I am sure you will enjoy it 😀.
I would love you to join me live for a reading of the first chapter on:
Saturday 12th March at 1000 AST on Instagram. and Sunday 1000 AST on my YouTube channel The Optimistic Gardener. I’ll be taking questions after.
