Be critical of the media you love.
At face value, this seems alright. Donning digital cosplay and being judged for your talent not your appearance. But normalizing the erasure of peopleโs identities as a pathway to fame is troubling.
Identity and individuality are aspects of ourselves that should be celebrated and uplifted. It feels like moving backwards to say, for example, โThe industry is racist therefore cover up your race.โ
It is very reminiscent of the "I don't see color, I just see people," catch phrase loved by so many "forward thinkers." They are choosing to be ignorant of systemic oppression and are avoiding essential discourse required to grow as a society.
