A couple years ago I had this idea for a Christmas song chorus that reminded me of Brenda Lee and Ronnie Ronette called ā€œEvery Single Christmas.ā€ My good friend JD McPherson finished the song and included it on his now iconic 50’s style holiday record, ā€œSocks.ā€ Since then, I’ve kept hearing it in my head as a fast and wild Christmas punk song - like Cyndi Lauper and Brenda Lee, the spirit of the NY Dolls and The Ramone’s ā€œPalisades Park,ā€ all rolled up into a National Lampoon’s Christmas movie.

I wanted to make a holiday song that I haven’t heard in a long time or maybe I have never heard before, so here it is: ā€œEvery Single Christmas.ā€ watch video on watch page

Exciting news! This Wednesday I’ll be presenting the world premiere of my new video for Mind Eraser at 1:10pm CT.

But that’s not all! Before we premiere the video, I am sitting down with the director, the amazingly talented Big Howl, coming to us all the way from England to discuss how they came up with the vision! Apparently, they only speak in whispers and will have an interpreter. Interesting stuff! Mark your calendars!

WE’RE BACK!

I am very excited to let you all know that I’m bringing back my livestream show - kicking off this Wednesday at 7:00PM ET on Amazon Music’s Twitch channel!

Instead of the show being in my attic, we are bringing summer vacation at the shore to your home, live from Asbury Park, NJ! That’s right! Amidst this time of unprecedented change, it’s still July and everyone needs a little ā€˜Italian Ice’ to soothe their souls and make some memories.

So every Wednesday starting July 15, I’ll be hosting ā€œLive From the Steel Porch, along with some of my bandmates and a couple of local band friends from Langosta Lounge. Each week I’ll be featuring places around town that are near and dear to my heart, along with special guest performances sent in from incredible artists from around the globe! With live performances of songs from ā€˜Italian Ice’ and many surprises.

I’ve been waiting to share this with you all for quite some time and am so excited to be able to present this show full of my favorite things. The beach, the boardwalk, rock n roll, mystical things and pizza.

This week’s guests include Shakey Graves, Devon Gilfillian, Deal Casino, and ā€˜Pie Times’ guest - Danny Clinch!

We’ve kept things safe, the crew tight and healthy, and I hope you all are staying healthy and sane.

A year or so back, Jim Sclavunos and I went to a studio in Nashville ran by this guy named Dex Green, to finish up our duets record.

Dex was an affable guy. Really laid back. We were talking about the kinds of music we liked to write and he said he was writing a lot of pop and country. I told him about this Charlotte Gainsbourg song I was really into that summer while doing long drives on tour. I didn’t think he’d be into it.

A couple weeks later I get a text from Dex saying ā€œI’m obsessed with this song!ā€ And I asked him if we could try and write something like it that would fit into my style. He said we could try.

The next week he sent me over a bass and drum groove and we worked on it remotely. It sounded so good without even real words over it yet I was almost too intimidated to put something to it.

One afternoon I went over to visit Dex at his studio. The word Domino kept coming up with the ā€œfakeā€ words I was singing to the melody. That day it seemed every creep at the time was on the front page of the paper and goin to jail. The line ā€œwatch em fall like dominosā€ was inspired by that. But I didn’t want it to be just about creeps.
I thought about what that line could mean to me and it came to me. Anxiety. I used to be a really anxious person. Worried about most things. Then I fell into a sinkhole. Not spiritually but a real one like 9 or 10 feet in the ground. It was dark and I woke up in the bottom of it. Knocked out and luckily I had one pal with me to help me out of there.

It was really fucked and scary but I got lucky. Minimal injuries and a couple not so cool scars. But it knocked my anxiety right out of me. I mean, to experience first hand how short and unexpected life can be, and get out on the good side, helped me take a lot less for granted and my worry disappeared. I mean, when you could maybe almost die in a random hole in the ground in a random parking lot at a shitty motel in Knoxville, life doesn’t seem too scary anymore.

So don’t be afraid of shit. Do what you wanna do. Take risks. So then at least when your numbers up, you won’t have regrets.

That’s what Domino is about.
