DR. PIM VAN LOMMEL, M.D.
- explains the role of music in the so-called Near Death Experience, NDE.
Pim van Lommel researched the phenomenon as a cardiologist, together with patients who had a cardiac arrest, and experienced the phenomenon. Their stories, though these patients did not know each other, had similarities, that have been archived, studied, analysed and published as a research in the iconic medical journal "The Lancet".
The book: Endless Consciousness was published in 2008 and has been translated in several languages.

THE ROLE OF MUSIC IN A NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE

Article: What does a near-death experience 'sound like'?
By: Pim van Lommel
Published: March 27, 2019

"
Science never stands still – not even in music. In Preludium we highlight the latest insights. This month, cardiologist Pim van Lommel highlights the role of music in near-death experiences.

Throughout human history, there have been people who tell about an extraordinary experience after a life-threatening crisis. This is now called a near-death experience (NDE). These experiences are increasingly being reported: as a result of improved resuscitation techniques, more and more people survive a crisis, and the content of the NDE and its effect on patients seems to be the same worldwide.

An NDE, or an experience of expanded consciousness, can occur under various circumstances, both during a total failure of all brain functions in cardiac arrest and under circumstances in which the brain functions normally, such as during meditation. Various elements of an NDE are reported, such as observing your own resuscitation, a tunnel, a bright light, an unworldly environment with beautiful colors.

Or, for example, with transcendental, harmonious melodies, a life review, meeting deceased family members, or a conscious return to the body. A very profound experience, which falls outside our normal expectations, for which there are actually no words and which usually remains undiscussed.

✴ FINDING WORDS FOR THE "INCREDIBLY INTENSE AND MUSICALLY PERFECT HARMONIES" IS VERY DIFFICULT
Finding words for the 'incredibly intense and musically perfect harmonies' is particularly difficult. As someone described it: 'Music, but completely different, like I had never heard it on earth. It is as if countless beautiful and harmonious voices are singing a heavenly melody that accompanies an orchestra of softly sounding instruments. Each voice in the choir harmonizes with the whole. The music radiates an incredible love and joy that deeply moves you. This is music on a level that goes beyond hearing; it is experienced and felt internally.’

Several musicians have tried to bring these sounds to life after their NDE, such as Steve Roach with his Structures of Silence and Mike Oldfield with Music of the Spheres. Also Symphony No 7 (Angel of Light) by Einojuhani Rautavaara and Harmony of the Spheres by Joep Franssens are examples of compositions that touch on the musical experiences of people with an NDE.

Vocal music by the medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen, some compositions by Arvo Pärt, Aleksandr Skrjabin and Erik Satie, but also choral works by Johann Sebastian Bach often evoke deep emotions and recognition in people who have experienced an NDE. The same applies to Peter Vigh's Totaliter Aliter, which has been performed in the Small Hall of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, on April 4, 2019.
