It's over ten years since I first walked down a grungy, dark, stinky, Melbourne alley to discover what was behind the doors of number 20.
Bar Americano broke the mould of what a cocktail bar was and is. When you went through the doors you were transported to another place and time as you were greeted by bowties and crisp white shirts and given the spiel. "... the bar has been modelled on a postwar American bar in Italy in the late 1940's ..."; It didn't matter how many times we went, we always asked to hear the spiel again. Sinatra or Nat King Cole was playing from what sounded like am old valve radio hidden out the back, and it was so, so dark you could barely see the menu, let alone the other 8 or 9 patrons standing, quietly talking, and drinking away in this dimly lit Melbourne oasis. I brought into the story every time hook, line, and sinker as did everyone I took thereafter.
What Matthew Bax had created was truly a crossover between art, theatre, and exceptional hospitality. Oh and the DRINKS! Oh my God they were so good you could never have just one as the quality of the ingredients decanted from those unmarked crystal decanters was extraordinary.
The bar went through a few different stories over 11 years, but the true tenant never changed. Art, theatre, and exceptional hospitality with exceptional drinks. An escape from the mundane.
So tonight it ends and I salute you @baremericano. I'm excited for what comes next.
The sign always said "NO PHOTOGRAPHY" but we graciously thank Matt for letting us turn on the cameras and film last drinks at Bar Americano set to premiere this Friday. Keep your eyes out for the release, and subscribe if you don't want to miss it.
