We’re celebrating World Giraffe Day – highlighting the world’s tallest animal fighting against extinction.

In just 30 years, the population of these gentle giants has fallen nearly 40 percent! In the wild, they face habitat loss, habitat degradation, habitat fragmentation, human population growth, population isolation, climate change, oil/gas exploration and poaching.

But, all hope is not lost! At the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited Phoenix Zoo (in collaboration with other AZA-accredited zoos and other field partners), we are focused on ensuring a future for wild giraffe. We are active participants in AZA’s Giraffe Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) collaboration for Masai giraffe, which focuses on direct conservation actions, education, scientific research, public awareness and bringing the animal care skills of the AZA community to support conservation.

They're baaaaaaack!

Fennec foxes, McFly and Noelle, were moved back to their habitat on the Africa Trail on May 26. The foxes were residing in a habitat behind-the-scenes while the noisy portion of the Africa Trail expansion construction was taking place.

Noelle, our 11-year-old female, can be distinguished from McFly, our 10-year-old male, by the black tip on her tail.

We’ve got news worth howling about — Olivia the howler monkey has two new friends!

A few weeks ago, we welcomed two female southern black howler monkeys, Bennie (Olivia's great granddaughter) and Maddie, from the Brevard Zoo.

The girls are still getting to know each other, and Olivia is slowly getting used to having roommates again!

Meet the Girls:
Seven-year-old Bennie has a very blonde coat and moves FAST around the habitat. She is shy and likes to spend her time in the company of the older girls. But, she is slowly coming out of her shell!

23-year-old Maddie has a darker coat. She is quieter and more reserved than the other girls. She is comfortable spending time on her own or with others. Oh, and she really loves food! She is the quickest one to be territorial over her space.

26-year-old Olivia has lived at the Zoo for about 25 years. She hasn't lived with other females before, so she's learning how to read social cues from the girls. She's holding her own and is slowly allowing them to share her space.

Next time you're at the Zoo, make sure to stop by the howler monkey habitat to say hi to Olivia, Bennie and Maddie!

First they're sour, then they're sweet!

When it comes to siamangs, the father does his share of raising the baby. He takes over the daily care of the youngster when it is about one year old.

Our flock is growing... AGAIN!

We’re excited to announce that two greater flamingo chicks hatched in the greater flamingo habitat on the Africa Trail, and we're expecting more in the coming weeks!

Greater flamingo chicks hatch with white/gray, downy feathers and straight bills. They won’t get their iconic pink color and hook-shaped bills for several years.

Follow along for future updates, as the chicks continue to grow!
