To us, our last two albums have always felt like one big body of work. They were made at the same time. Maybe one album is a sister album or companion piece. The first lyric on Time Will Wait For No One was also the last lyric on But I'll Wait For You. But today we're finally putting them back together, along with 10 more songs from this era, for a triple deluxe album Time Will Wait For No One But I'll Wait For You.

Among the 10 new songs is one of the 47 versions of Alpharetta we've talked so much about and our cover of 'Sadness As A Gift' by Adrianne Lenker which slowly felt so appropriate for this end of an era.

Nik has released his second Chewing album, “Songs For Linnéa” a collection of minimal piano songs written for his daughter. It’s just him on the piano. No overdubs. No singing. There is only one run of limited edition, beautiful white 140g vinyl. To stream and buy vinyl: chewinginc.com/.

Here's Nik:
"When my first child was born, I played piano for her almost daily. This album is for her, to have a document of the music from the beginning of her life. Who knows what music consumption will be like in the future. Making a physical version of this album is so important, so she can hold and listen to this vinyl decades from now.

“Songs For Linnéa” is such a personal document. There’s a cover of “She Loves You” which I’ve sung for my daughter every night. The song “First Melody” she actually wrote with me, I approximated the first melody she sang with my right hand. “Morning After The Greek” was written the morning after Local Natives played The Greek in 2021, when I thought my band was imploding right as I was about to become a parent. I’m so proud of this album and how minimal and intimate it is.

In the spirit of continuing to push myself, I’ll be performing just one intimate concert, on my birthday, in Los Angeles to celebrate this album. An opener that I can’t to announce shortly, followed by me just on the piano and ending the night with improv where I’ll be joined by friends who happen to also be some of my favorite musicians: my bff Ryan Hahn, Dave Harrington (I’m flattered he mastered my album as I’ve been such a huge fan of his music for a decade), Griffin Goldsmith, plus more friends."

“Songs for Linnea” out now.

Nik just released the final singles before his second Chewing album is released Sept 13.
He's also playing an intimate concert in Los Angeles at the Lodge Room October 1. For tickets & to pre-order vinyl: chewinginc.com/

Debut Chewing Concert
October 1, 2024 - Los Angeles, CA - Lodge Room
Set 1: Solo piano performance by Nik Ewing

Intermission

Set 2: Improv free jazz set by:
Nik Ewing - keys, etc.
Ryan Hahn - guitar
Dave Harrington (of the duo DARKSIDE with Nicolas Jaar & the infamous jam band Taper's Choice with lots of others) - guitar
Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes, etc.) - drums
Special Guest - bass

"When my first child was born, I played piano for her almost daily. A lot of days when she was an infant, I would hold her in one arm while playing piano with the other hand. One day she kind of sang along and made a repetitive noise to what I was playing. I approximated this as best as I could with my right hand in the “verses” of this song, “First Melody” that we wrote together. This album is for her, to have a document of the music from the beginning of her life. Making a physical version of this album is so important, so she can hold and listen to this album on vinyl in 20 years. Who knows what music consumption will be like decades from now?" watch video on watch page

Nik parked at the Galleria in Glendale, Calif. then crossed the street to perform two songs at The Americana from his upcoming Chewing album "Songs For Linnéa" for ‪@FLOODmagazine‬ 's Neighborhoods series.

Filmed by Jonathan Chu (who also directed our But I'll Wait For You short film, NYE, Tap Dancer, April & Camera Shy music videos) and accompanied by Tam Visher (who also made a cameo in our NYE music video & helped choreograph the April dance). In 2021 Local Natives performed a beautiful, sold out, first ‘post-pandemic’ concert at the historic Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. We spoke candidly over our last two LN albums about the dichotomy of how emotional and beautiful that night was; our first concert in almost two heavy years, but also wondering if that was the last Local Natives concert ever as Kelcey was considering leaving the band. Was my band falling apart right as I was also about to become a father? I wrote the main left hand melody the morning after that show. I recorded this song in March 2023 and since then things (in my band & in my life) have changed again and that’s ok. The song meant one thing when I wrote it, another thing when I recorded it, another thing right now and I’m sure it will mean something else to me in the future. A song takes on different meanings, it often evolves over time. This song is my peaceful acceptance of the uncertain future.
