Hey dear community,
As you can guess from the title, I've asked this question myself.
Like you, I don't always have time for music production. π
You might face similar issues with gigs, jobs, and holidays slowing down your music creation.
With the promotion of my new EP, this problem surfaced more often, I had to make the most of every second in the studio.
I found out that limiting myself to one tool can challenge my creativity and lead to new techniques I missed with the numerous synthesizers at my disposal.
If I had to choose one synthesizer for a whole track, it would be Pigments. I bet you're wondering why not Serum or Vital or His Majesty Virus The Great...
And here are the reasons why :
π It combines wavetable, analog, granular and additive synthesis in one place.
π It has 2 filters that can morph between serial and parallel configurations.
π It has traditional and creative effects, ie: I can use it as a multi-effect... more on that here.
π With its sequencer I can create complex Q&A phrases as it allows per-step randomisation, scale lock and polyrhythms.
π Since this is the third week of my birthday party, all of my Pigments preset packs are on sale alongside the Freakyrecipes for the MicroFreak pack.

Hi dear community,
In the past few years, many great soft synthesizers have been released, like Vital and Pigments, to name a few. Each brings something new to the table and pushes the boundaries of sound design. This has raised the question in the community: is Serum about to die? π€
In my opinion, Serum is a timeless synthesizer, like the NordLead2 or the Virus.
π For sound design, Serum's filters are still my go-to tools because they are flexible and offer deep control over their character. For example, I can combine a bandpass and a notch filter, then feed everything into a comb filter (a sound designer's dream π).
π Since I can move Serum's FX modules the way I like, I can add any effect, like distortion, between the two filters for extra flavor.
π And when I want to modulate those effects, Serum's LFOs are still the most precise, allowing me to draw exactly the modulation shape I like, with options to loop a given portion of that shape to create a sequence or an LFO within an LFO.
π However, the most important feature that I can't live without is Serum's wavetable manipulation capabilities. With Serum, I can create wavetables from any sample or even manipulate existing ones to create new wavetables. In my opinion, this is the main tool for expressivity because it allows the producer to create their own sound identity right from the oscillator.

My new track "Acid Workout" is out on this amazing Acid Mutant VA by STALL on Soundblasting Records.
I wrote this track back in June 2023 specifically for my Natarja festival live set. By that time, I was starting to go regularly to the gym and actually liking this whole workout thing, so the track, as its name suggests, is pretty much inspired by crossfit, weight lifting, and cardio. And if you think about it, dancing to a high BPM psychedelic track isn't only an act of meditation but also a really nice cardio workout πͺ
When it comes to sequencing this track, I heavily used three synthesizers: Pigments by Arturia and Vital by Matt Tytle for the majority of the structure, and for the contrast element, which in this case is a smooth squelch, I used the MicroFreak by Arturia with its super silky SEM-inspired filter. π€
