STAINS & DYE IN OPHTHALMOLOGY

A. CORNEAL STAINS
1. Fluorescein: stain broken epithelium i.e. base of ulcer. Cobalt blue light for visualization
Other uses: jones dye test for lacrimation, dry eye

2. Rose Bengal: necrotic tissue (even if epithelium intact). Stains margin of ulcer

3. Alcian Blue: mucin stain

4. Lissamime green: dont stain healthy epithelium


B. Retina
1. Fluorescein: orange color dye,10ml, under 520nm blue light. Used in FFA. Used to assess blood retinal barrier and vasculature.

2. Indocyanin green: for choroidal vasuclature.
810nm light


C. Lacrimal
1. Fluroscein
2. Phenol red: dye is yellow in color, but gives red color on contact with tears.


D. Corneal Dystrophies
1. Congo red: lattice and gelatinous dystrophy
2. Masson Trichome: granular dystrophy
3. Oil red-o: schnyder
