I have for now made my channel private. I've found more examples of people taking my work and selling it or otherwise turning it for profit. That is not why I do this. While I realize that the material itself is not owned by me, it sickens me that someone has taken 15 years worth of time, energy, effort, skill, purchased materials and machines and programs... and has just decided to sell it and take credit for it.

I am undecided if I am going to make this public again. And if I do, everything will be severely logo-ed to prevent theft.

It's been a little rough in VHS-land. I had a major channel steal one of my uploads, slap their logo on it, and decide to not share any credit for the discovery. It's a real bummer, because I contribute money to them every month via Patreon and a subscription - and they've also discussed how they have this same problem of people doing it to them. I believe in what they do, but this week, my faith in the community is shaken.

It's left me disinclined to keep on sharing stuff I've digitized. I have 2860 commercials and things that are waiting to be uploaded - and those are just the ones I've separated out from larger files. I have 5327 larger commercial break files, each with 3-8 commercials that I haven't edited yet. It's a LOT of stuff. I have hundreds of tapes I have not even watched yet.

But the investment I've made of time and money into a non-monetized channel has started to feel like a waste of time, especially when something is just stolen from you that someone else profits from. Putting a logo on everything going forward sullies the experience of just seeing cool old things; I'm not doing this for attention or to put myself as the subject of interest. You'll never see my name or face on most things - but if theft of effort is the new name of the game, I might have to cover everything with logos.

I'm left with a bit of an existential crisis. I have so many tapes left to scour through, and it's something I usually enjoy even if it takes 2-8 hours per tape, but I have no motivation to continue to carefully catalog and upload them when there are so many other things I want to do anyway.

What would you do?

7000 subscribers! When I'm not archiving VHS tapes and saving them from the trash, I turn the ones I can't save into dioramas. Here's my most recent one, based on one of the best movies of all time, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. If you like this, please follow me on Instagram @FarOutJunk and @FarOurVHS.

I started this channel about a decade and a half ago and didn't know what to do with it other than find a way to save some of the VHS I recorded from TV when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. It's evolved into a much more expansive archival project, even though I've dipped into trying livestreaming art and video games just to see how it would go. I'm going to keep that to Twitch if I ever get back to it.

The channel is not monetized. I don't make a single cent from this, which is fine; I enjoy it. I'm happy to invest my time and money into acquiring tapes. But it would mean a lot if you could follow me on Instagram to check out my art.

Thank you for watching!

Hard at work digitizing thousands of hours of abandoned VHS tapes. For many, it's a meticulous de-molding process - opening them up, running them through a disposable VCR, using alcohol and a small vacuum. Sometimes it's worth what you find on there, and sometimes... it's just a boring afternoon of TCM. It's still fun to try.

Crawling towards 5k. Completely un-monetized. Hope you enjoy the effort!

Small note to say that Mindless Shelf Indulgence is now Far Out Junk as I rebrand all my stuff under a more unified umbrella. Exact same content, brand new name. If you like this stuff, please follow FarOutVHS on Instagram.

We're crawling towards 4k subscribers, but as a non-monetized channel, numbers are meaningless. Lots of little hurdles, but the worst is being constantly harassed by copyright trolls "LDS Affiliate"; I get dozens of emails a day saying that commercials which they DO NOT OWN are being claimed. I'm buying VHS tapes, digitizing them, cataloging them, uploading them.... and getting only harassment in return. It's not really great motivation to continue to upload every day! YouTube continues to allow copyright trolling to continue and it's a miserable experience. So, uploads are slow; it just feels self-destructive sometimes.

My digitizing computer also kicked the bucket; I've cobbled together a laptop solution as I figure out just how much I can continue to invest in this. It's better than nothing! If anyone wants to hit up that Ko-fi link, I wouldn't object.

For now, continue to enjoy the videos! Uploading lots more as soon as I can; I have hundreds of commercials and videos that are already digitized and on the way.

So, this channel is being targeted by a copyright troll calling themselves "Music Video Distributors", claiming that much of my content is in some imaginary TV series called "Reach To Limits". It's clear that this isn't a real thing. I can't find any evidence this thing exists, and they're claiming a wide variety of things that some company could not possibly own all of. How do you fight copyright trolls?

Grateful for 2250 subscribers! I have hundreds of unseen videos to upload, and even more tapes to even just watch from this new batch. Over the past year, I've watched and catalogued over 150 tapes, and I have a new batch of 75 to start going through.

YouTube doesn't let me make any money doing this, which is fine - I get it. But if you enjoy this and want to throw a dollar at it, I've set up a Ko-fi account; every dollar buys a VHS that I'll watch, edit, and upload here. You don't have to, but if you do, it'll make a difference on the channel! Thanks for watching!
