ON-STAGE Mic. TECHNIQUES

Tips that could help while singing on a microphone.

1) Sing into the center of the mic:
Whether your mic is unidirectional or omnidirectional, singing into the center of the mic head produces the best from the mic.

2) Understand the proximity effect:
The closer you get to the mic head, the more muddy the sound may get, as lower parts of the tone get emphasized. Conversely, as you pull away from the microphone depending on your vocal power. You should be able to balance your mic proximity on stage.

3) Hold the microphone correctly:
Always hold it by the shaft, not by the head. Keep the shaft pointed slightly down toward the floor. Make sure you donโ€™t grip it too tightly. But do hold it firmly and comfortably and donโ€™t tap it.

4) Use a windscreen or pop filter:
Most singers find it difficult pronouncing every word clearly on a mic. Using a pop filter diffuses the blast of air that results from your plosive consonants.

5) Insist on having dedicated monitors:
You can't control your output if you can't hear clearly what it sounds like.
