Arrow Film's "Gamera: The Complete Collection" is released on Blu-ray on August 17 and it looks to be the definitive Gamera collection on home video. Every Gamera film featured on this channel will be available in Arrow's collection. This includes the four films on this channel that have two English-language versions. Arrow's box set presents all films in their original aspect ratio and in much higher audio & video quality than our uploads. Content unique to the English versions we've uploaded, including titles, credits, text, and other footage, will also be available in the Arrow collection. We encourage our subscribers to support Arrow's hard work and dedication by buying their collection. It will be sold in the U.S. and the UK.
Since 2014, all eight of the Showa-era Gamera films have been available on Blu-ray in North America, but only in Japanese. Prior to this, in 2010, Shout! Factory released the entire series on DVD with all but "Gamera" and "Gamera vs. Barugon" presented in English. While Shout! Factory's efforts were noble, those DVDs were rife with errors that affected the films' presentations. Additionally, the sources they used for some of the films' English audio were even worse than what we've presented to you here since 2017.
Our goal when starting this channel three years ago was to preserve a part of American pop cultural heritage. To us, that meant not only preserving unavailable English audio for these films but also presenting the films as they were originally and largely seen in the United States. This is why the majority of our uploads are full screen, pan and scanned, and cropped "bastardized" copies of the films. We're aware that these versions are available elsewhere on the internet and on video, but we've tried to share with you versions which are the most faithful to the original English releases. We hope we've succeeded.
By all advance accounts, Arrow's product will make our Gamera uploads superfluous. It is not our intention to affect Arrow's business, especially since theirs is an official product while we have no legal right to broadcast these films. With that in mind, we've decided that our twelve Gamera uploads will be made unavailable after August 17. The other videos on the channel (that is, every non-Gamera film) will be unaffected.
We understand this will be an unpopular decision, but as stated, we are not trying to compete with the rightful distributor. And although 55% of our views come from the United States, we realize that many of our subscribers are not located in the regions where this box set will be sold and that they will have to find other ways to view these movies. At present we aren't able to limit our videos to specific regions; for better or worse, it's worldwide or bust.
