When I listen to NOFX, my ears go on alert waiting for the clever songwriting-goodness to fly by at any given second. I'm always refreshed hearing their polished arrangements, production, and Fat Mike's witty sentiments about the world we live in. I was truly taken aback by a few surprises nestled within the record: they explored some sounds I’d have never expected from NOFX, and Fat Mike’s bass-playing is deceptively tricky. These lyrics took me on quite the ride, all the way through the last song which actually took my breath away.
Come chill with me (and our sweet lil' community) this weekend as I break down this truly colorful album! 😉🤌🏼

Streetlight Manifesto's "Somewhere in the Between" keeps getting 2nd place in our monthly polls, and as you all know by now, I do my best to give the people what they want. So, I did an extra episode this month! This album basically forced me to smile for 2 hours straight, but I was equally overtaken by a blank, clueless expression from sheer musical overwhelm. Every single song was a rich, cinematic experience supercharged by Pete McCullough’s stupendous bass work.

“Everything Sucks” by DESCENDENTS was a challenge to analyze in ways I never expected. I was taken on a wild escapade full of raw emotion, quirky surprises, and head-scratching epiphanies. The coolest part? I was left in the dust trying to keep up with Karl Alvarez's bass playing. Everything he played gave me a run for my money, kept me guessing, and kept me grinning until the album's final moments.

My older brother showed up at my house and gifted me these after seeing my last video on NOFX! 😍
Guess I have to do a NOFX bass cover now…what song should I tackle?!

Flashback to teaching a bass camp in Germany years ago! My class focused on writing independent bass lines, and how to find opportunities to stand out in songs. I’ve considered doing clinics again in the US, because they’re a blast every time. 🤓🎸
Low End University was founded by Mark Michell, an internationally-touring and recording bassist known for his work with Scale the Summit, Tony MacAlpine, Tetrafusion, and Watermox. His most-recent albums were released to Billboard-charting acclaim in the Top 200, Top Rock Albums, Top Independent Albums, Heatseekers Albums, Top Current Albums and Contemporary Jazz Albums categories.
For over a decade, Michell has been teaching clinics to students around the globe while on tour, has enrolled thousands of students through Low End University's online bass academy, and has published six method books for bass guitar. 2016 saw the release of his instructional DVD "Advanced Rock Bass" after signing a worldwide publishing deal with Hal Leonard Music Corporation, and later that year was hand-selected to the panel of professors at the Warwick Bass Camp in Germany to teach alongside the best bass players in the world.
