Early October my dear friend and teacher ‪@VivienChaoTaichiQigong‬ came to visit.

We spent the weekend of Oct 7th in Eastern Oregon, miles outside of cell phone range, capturing the healing arts of Qigong in a magical forest of Fall splendor.

It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.

We woke up before dawn to hike the mighty Tumalo waterfall, explored brilliant golden Aspen groves illuminated by the clear light.

We splashed with my daughter Shaliz in the crystal pure waters of nearby streams and felt like we were in Heaven on Earth.

We came home with our cameras full and hearts bursting with a vision of hope and harmony for ourselves and Nature.

Monday morning one of my dear friends and clients appeared in our session dressed in black and shared the heartbreaking news that has now rocked the world.

Within a week, communities, families and friends were torn apart physically, emotionally and mentally into separate camps of right, wrong, good, bad, friend and enemy.

Unimaginable pain, centuries of bitterness and the chaos of global attention has shattered the peace and wellbeing of countless souls.

Grasping desperately to my NonViolent Communication tools to look beneath blame, revenge and the dehumanization of the enemy, I found little solace in the public discourse.

As I heard the grief and pain of my students and coaching clients who have been affected by this tragedy I felt like I was standing in front of a forest fire with only a thimble full of water.

I yearned for the ability to bring clarity, hope and healing to all involved, feeling completely incapable.

In the weeks that followed, the words of one of the students in my Qigong for Cancer class kept echoing in my mind, "During your class, I was able to focus on my vitality and energy, not on my sickness."

I came to realize that as I hold empathy for all who have been hurt by this conflict, and hold hope for a peaceful resolution, I don't need to hold my breath and deprive myself of the wellness and vitality that is also present and available.

It is possible to hold the threads of grief and the threads of love at the same time.
Possible to hold the hearts and bodies of both sides of a conflict with value and respect.
To weave together light and shadow, pain and pleasure, the beautiful and the repulsive.

As I stand before this forest fire, I offer my small cup of water.

Filled from the mighty Tumalo Falls, I hope it can bring a sip of relief to you in these heartbreaking times.
