Hi Everyone, I am finally able to talk about this major life update that has changed our world forever. A day before Valentines Day, we had a vet appointment for Shadow. This was heartbreaking for us to find out and have had a difficult time accepting this.
Shadow has adjusted better than we have. We found out that Shadow went blind. We were noticing a week or so before this appointment that he was stumbling around and bumping into things. We thought maybe he had vertigo since our last puppy Sneaker had it, it very much resembled some of the symptoms. Nope he went blind. Words we were not expecting. Heartbreaking say the least. Spaniels the breed in general are susceptible to vision problems.
This one that took Shadow's vision loss is known as (PRA): When a cocker spaniel loses their vision due to eye degeneration, it's typically referred to as "Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)" - a genetic condition that causes gradual deterioration of the retina, leading to blindness in dogs, including cocker spaniels.
Key points about PRA in cocker spaniels:
Meaning:
PRA stands for Progressive Retinal Atrophy, indicating a progressive loss of vision due to the deterioration of the retina's light-sensitive cells.
Inheritance:
This condition is inherited, meaning it can be passed down from parent dogs to their offspring.
Early symptoms:
Often, dogs with PRA first experience night blindness as the rod cells (responsible for low-light vision) are affected first.
No cure:
Currently, there is no cure for PRA, but early detection can help manage the dog's quality of life as their vision declines.
We could have taken him to an Specialist ( ophthalmologist) and spent thousands of dollars investigating more, but it still would not bring back his vision back. We opted not to go that route. We would do anything for this little guy if we knew it would bring back his vision.
So this is where I have been getting him acclimated to his new condition and environment helping him navigating his life as a blind dog. He is adjusting well and is still a sweet dog, but he is not that same energetic dog he once was, when he looked forward to running and playing in the snow, chasing squirrels and chasing balls.
Not much more to say. He is healthy otherwise.
Just wanted to update everyone on this one life change we can not change. The other ones we dealt with in February are some what manageable.

Let's Finally Celebrate!!! I am at officially as I post this 741 Subs. I am so grateful and thankful for everyone who has subscribed and have supported me on my channel.
