Hem Chandra Bose: whose discoveries were stolen by the British -
The Henry system of Classification of Fingerprints, as we were wrongly made to believe, was pioneered by the then Inspector General of Bengal Police Sir Edward Henry.
But recent searches have made it clear that it was devised by two Indian Sub-Inspectors of Police, Azizul Haque and Hem Chandra Bose.
Henry didn’t mention their roles for almost three decades. He first acknowledged the role of Haque in 1926 and for Bose it took another four years.
Hem Chandra Bose published his first work in 1916 explaining the telegraphic codes of fingerprints. Bose devised a single digit classification instead of ten digits. Single digit classification helped in transmitting through telegraphs easily.
Haque and Bose are only two of several Indian scientists whose discoveries were credited in the name of Europeans.

‘I am the great Muhammad Ali from America and you are the great Muhammad Rafi from India’, said Muhammad Ali when he first met Muhammad Rafi in the USA in the year 1979.
Below is an account of their interaction by Shahid Rafi, son of #MuhammadRafi.
Shahid Rafi shares a lesser known but delightful fact about his father Muhammad Rafi – apart from his flair singing, the legendary singer Muhammad Rafi had keen interest in boxing. He was a big heavyweight boxing fan who loved watching fights specially those of Cassius Clay, better known as Muhammad Ali.
He was in awe of the boxing champ and it was his dream to meet him one day. Muhammad Rafi got his chance when he was in the midst of performing 14 concerts in 14 different cities in the US in 1979.
A fan-cum friend of Muhammad Rafi, who had been attending all his concerts, happened to know Muhammad Ali. Muhammad Rafi was delighted to discover this and requested for a meeting.
#MuhammadAli was living in Kentucky at that time. Muhammad rafi took time out from his busy concert schedule and took flight from Chicago along with his 18 years old son Shahid and his wife. They reached the hotel and waited for Muhammad Ali in his room. Shahid recounts, “Obviously, he had not heard any of Muhammad Rafi Saab’s songs.
But he was aware that my father was a big singer in India. Muhammad Ali came and sat down. Maybe it was exciting for him to meet another well-known Muhammad and he said, ‘I am the great Muhammad Ali from America and you are the great Muhammad Rafi from India.’ The feeling was great.
Muhammad Ali chatted with the Rafi Family for about 45 minutes and discussed boxing and music.
Muhammad Rafi wanted to remember this moment and Muhammad Ali had an idea. Muhammad Ali said, ‘We will pose like this. You punch me on the face and I will punch you back’. And they laughed about it, Shahid said.
Muhammad Rafi was beaming after the meeting his dream boxing star and asked Shahid ‘Beta kaisa laga? Kya kamal ka admi hai. (Son, how did you feel? What a wonderful man). Shahid replied, ‘it was great father. He taught me one of his principles which I still remember. ‘kabhi upar dekh ke mat chala karo, thokar khaoge. Sab insaan hain beta.’ (Be grounded, never walk with arrogance, you can fall. All humans are equal.)
