Calling Vietnamese speakers of English!

Do you know why your English doesn't sound British when you speak it?

Shall I tell you why?

There are a number of reasons but I’m going to tell you the 4 Top Reasons why you don’t sound like a native British speaker (RP) when you speak English.

### 1. Word Stress:

First off, word stress is a big one. In English, we stress certain syllables when speaking multi-syllable words, but many Vietnamese learners tend to stress each syllable equally or not at all. This can lead to misinterpreting the meaning of words, which obviously isn't ideal. Not sure which syllable to stress? You need to consistently practice speaking English and almost learn each word by rote.

Concentrate on the most used words in English first - great place to start is the Top 500 words and Top 300 Verbs in Course 2 of the British Accent Bundle . Listen along to how I say each word, pause, and repeat them yourself. It would be great to record yourself as you do so! Listening to English will really help expose you to lots of different vocab and their pronunciation. I have hours of audio recordings in the Bundle for you to listen to.

### 2. Missing Sounds

Secondly, missing sounds can also be a problem. Vietnamese speakers struggle with pronouncing certain sounds like "z," "s," and "t" because they don't exist in their native language. This often leads to these sounds being deleted or substituted with something more familiar, which can make your English sound less British.

I want you to focus on the final consonant sounds of “z”, “s”, “t”, “v”, “ed”, “ks”, and “st” . So practice words which use these sounds at the end of the word.

Also practice the middle sounds of longer multi-syllable words. There are many English words with middle sounds, some of them complex containing silent letters, diphthongs, and consonant clusters. Make sure you learn how to say these words correctly and don’t miss out middle sounds just because you find them difficult. Try breaking the word into its individual sounds and linking them more slowly than your normal speaking speed.

### 3. Consonant Clusters

Thirdly, consonant clusters can be tricky. They are quite unfamiliar to the Vietnamese language, so it's common for omissions, additions, and substitutions to occur. Practicing these sounds is important as they can greatly affect your overall intelligibility. Concentrate on words with [pr] [pl] [tr] [kr] [kl] [fl] [ks] [sk] [st] [ts] combinations. They can occur as initial sounds, middle or final sounds. You’ll get loads of practice examples with audio in Course 2 of the Bundle.

### 4. Understanding the different between long and short vowels

Understanding the difference between **long** and **short** vowels can be a challenge. For example the difference in vowels sounds between SEAT and SIT are often mixed up. Vietnamese learners can rely on spelling to produce the sounds so it can be so easy to confuse many long and short vowel sounds. Once you’ve learn’t the pronunciation difference of each of these vowel sounds (watch my week 1 and week 2 videos in course 1 of the British Accent Bundle) then consolidate this knowledge through loads of Minimal Pairs practice (Course 2).

Follow this step by step guide and master these 4 areas of the RP British English accent and you’ll radically improve how your English sounds.

Now wouldn't it be helpful to learn from a native RP speaker exactly how to pronounce all these different sounds and words? You can watch all my pronunciation videos and quickly learn exactly how each vowel and consonant sound is pronounced and embed this knowledge with practice words and sentences.

All these areas are covered in the **British Accent Bundle,** which is ****my RP British accent training package.
