Closing the Cords with the Appoggio Di Petto

The 'leaning of the chest' is an Old Italian School idea. This concept can be very valuable when employed with a forward stretch of the sternum at the onset. This forward stretch then relaxes to create a clean offset. This is an idea that can lead the singer to close the cords with the body resistance to the outflow of too much breath RATHER than slamming the cords together.

Teaching cord closure without healthy tall posture, suspended ribs (NOT locked open), and the appoggio de petto will never get the results that the singer needs in order to sing well. So when I present teacher trainings I always try to warn teachers NOT to take this concept too far with a slapping together of the cords. It is a dangerous approach and can lead to vocal damage in some cases.
