I was just a kid when I first caught DBZ on TV. It was like a 12-hour marathon on Toonami. I'd heard kids yelling "kamehameha!" and "destructo disk!" and I was like "oh, that's what this is". It was mid saiyan saga so Goku was already dead and my first experience was watching all these characters I didn't know die to stop Nappa. I got more and more invested. A few hours in I was yelling at the TV. "Kaioken times THREE!? Goku you're crazy!"

I never stopped watching. When Super happened I was overjoyed - it had taken fifteen years but it was back. I was in Japan at the time, doing six months of farm work as I travelled across the country. One of the highlights of my trip was catching Battle of Gods in the cinema in Japanese. It was mid-transit so I was dragging a suitcase and heavy backpack around the cinema but it was worth it. For those two hours I was transported away.

I'm broken that we'll never get to see a Toriyama-written ending to that story. Seeing the show revived after all this time was like a dream come true, and now that dream is broken. But everything he did will live on through the millions of fans across the world. Dragon ball will never die. What Toriyama has achieved is incredible, the impact he's had. One person absolutely can change the world and he did. While DBZ isn't my absolute favourite anime, my favourite animes were certainly all inspired and enabled by the work of Toriyama. A lot of my own creative origin I've realised is rooted in DBZ - when I'm designing a game I want that same drama, that same impact.

To this day I can't get rid of the DBZ bug. I'm 35 but when Ultra Instinct happened it felt like I was a kid again watching Gohan go super saiyan 2 for the first time. I hope Toyotaro can continue his work, and one day we get a true ending to the story started in Super.

Thank you for all the great times, Akira Toriyama.

When you log in to Steam and see "Prepurchase for £83.99!" Fucking hell, Bungie
That's not even a full game, just the latest expansion. And if you don't buy the latest expansion, you can no longer play multiplayer modes.
Gaming is in a bit of a state right now.

Really enjoying these vids from Tim Cain. Not full of design advice necessarily, but very vindicating stories from the world of game development and the problems designers can sometimes face in teams.

One of my favourite topics of conversation is Breath of the Wild's design, this is a great video talking about it. Huge fan of GMTK!

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom drops tomorrow and I will be streaming the moment I'm home from the gym! I've been basically avoiding everything to do with the game to keep it all an exciting discovery when I play. Who else is playing?

Midnight Suns has been such a strange game for reviewers - I feel like it's either glowing praise or total dislike. Few people, I think, have really dug into the grains on it. It's a very weird game and not easy to pick apart.

Shitpostiness aside, I think this is probably my best video. I'm very happy with it.

Happy new year everyone! Apparently we all have access to the community tab now, yay!

I've been working hard on the game I'm making, Frontier, so video essays have taken a back seat for the time being. But more video essays will come! In the meantime, I'll probably be doing a few more unscripted, rambly videos and maybe some streams.
