I was trying to understand why the interaction between these two ladies ‘rub me the wrong way’. It felt so simple and fleeting, yet I was annoyed watching the clips (did not watch the show).
I am still working through whether I am making something out of nothing, but since I have been isolated from our discord for a couple days, I will bring it here.
When I reviewed the “colored” experience in SA, it wasn’t just different from black, it was seen historically as being above black. While colored was below white— in the hierarchy of oppression it was definitely not at the bottom.
Back to the awards…
While Tyla does go on to clarify later that she did not ask Halle to hold the award, she did.
But…
If it was too heavy for Tyla, why wouldn’t she think it was also too heavy for Halle? Was it assumed that Lil Nas would step in? Was the assumption “of course someone else needs to carry my award”?
The question we cannot answer is simple, if Taylor Swift handed her the award with Justin Bieber next to her, would the award have been too heavy for Tyla then? The world will never know.
It did not miss me that she “fanned” Halle off when Halle attempted to hand her the card with her name, then she proceeded to announce “you know me, I’m not good with holding awards, they are too heavy…”
Young lady, first of all, we do not know you. Second, even if we did, neither people on stage works for you (you are not Michael Jackson— if you know you know… he also got dragged for that). Those are your colleagues, not your servants.
Finally…
While I enjoy AfroBeats, I cannot speak to whether Tyla is an AfroBeats artists… Y’all can have that conversation.
