šŸŽ· The Fifth Bar of Heaven – A Jazz Afterlife Play

open.substack.com/pub/bretprimack/p/the-fifth-bar-…

What happens when jazz legends meet again… beyond the stars?

Step into The Fifth Bar of Heaven, a one-act metaphysical play where Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane reunite in a celestial jazz club somewhere beyond Saturn’s rings.

Through poetic dialogue and musical rhythm, the play explores melody, harmony, rhythm, spirituality, legacy, and the transformative power of love — all in the language of jazz.

✨ Written with reverence and soul, this play is for jazz lovers, dreamers, musicians, and anyone who’s ever felt the universe in a single note.

šŸŽ Characters: Louis Armstrong | Duke Ellington | Charlie Parker (Bird) | Miles Davis | John Coltrane

🌌 Setting: A timeless afterlife jazz club — floating in cosmic silence, echoing with sound, memory, and meaning.

šŸ“– Themes:
• Jazz as philosophy
• Music as a prayer
• Growth through sound
• Love beyond legacy

šŸŽ¶ ā€œWe weren’t playing solos. We were sending messages.ā€ – Coltrane

I’m incredibly proud of my work and plan to continue sharing it on my blog and possibly other platforms. While it’s never been particularly lucrative, that’s never been the point. What truly matters to me are my feelings about the music and the musicians—those are everything.

As a Jew, I’m no stranger to anti-Semitism. Over the years, I’ve encountered hateful slurs like ā€œnigger-loving kikeā€ and even threats of violence, including castration. It’s jarring, but unfortunately, that kind of hate seems more widespread than ever these days.

The real tipping point for stepping away from YouTube and Facebook was a mix of rights issues and algorithm-driven censorship. While hiring a lawyer might have resolved some of the rights challenges, I simply don’t have the resources—or the patience—for that kind of legal battle.

What made it worse was the constant algorithm changes on both platforms, which increasingly dictated whether content was seen at all. In the early days—2006 for YouTube and 2010 for Facebook—I was able to build an audience based on the quality of my content. But with the rise of TikTok and the trend toward shorter attention spans, it’s become harder and harder for viewers to discover or engage deeply with videos. These days, even if a video manages to get found, only about 15% of viewers actually watch it to the end.

Thankfully, AI video has been a game-changer. I’m now creating content with AI tools, and it’s been a blast—both creatively and as a fresh opportunity. Posting on my blog means I no longer have to deal with censorship or the whims of algorithms.

I truly appreciate your friendship and support over the years. And for the record, living in Mexico has been a fantastic experience—especially now.

I am a very lucky man.

I have a heartfelt announcement to share. With a few exceptions, I will no longer be posting videos to this channel, which has been a part of my life since 2006. The channel and its content will remain on YouTube, allowing current and future generations to experience this extraordinary music.

However, recent challenges with rights issues on YouTube have made continuing difficult. Additionally, I’ve grown tired of dealing with offensive comments, including racist and anti-Semitic remarks directed at me and the music. One individual even went so far as to threaten me with castration, which has raised concerns for my family’s safety and my own peace of mind.

For these reasons, I’ve decided to step away from this channel to focus on other creative endeavors. It’s been an incredible journey collaborating with so many talented musicians and sharing their work with audiences worldwide. Over the past 18 years, this channel has reached nearly 50 million views, and I’m proud of the role I’ve played in promoting this beautiful music online.

To everyone who has supported me along the way: thank you. Your encouragement has meant the world to me. Jazz has been, and always will be, a lifelong passion. Here’s to the music, the memories, and the journey ahead!

I continue online with my blog: syncopatedjustice.com/
