I am so honored to have remixed another of my all time favorite records. This time, Bedrockās āHeaven Scentā. I have listened to the original so so many times and know it like the back of my hand. Iāve been desperate to remix it for years!
New Years Eve, 2020 - I was playing right before Sasha & Digweed in NYC at Cityfox. Iād just remixed āShiversā by Armin and wondered if John might be up for hearing a take on āHeaven Scentā, so I shot him a DM on Instagram⦠As you can see from the slide, John missed that message š»ā¦ but you can see how long Iāve waited to remix the tune!!
Fast forward to December 2024 - Iād heard a few new remixes of āHeaven Scentā surfacing and wondered if I could try my luck again at getting the parts⦠I mentioned this to my team (who I didnāt have in 2020) and woke up the next day with the parts! š¤£
I pretty much dropped every project that I had been working on to get a draft ready to play out for my 2024 NYE weekend. I had a draft ready in a few days, sent it to John and he said it was an instant yes! š¾
Honestly, these legendary anthems donāt need to be touched but I do like to have versions of them for my sets. If youāve never heard āHeaven Scentā before, Itās a blessing to be able to share it with you and if youāve grown up with it, like me, I hope I donāt disappoint!
Hope you love it!

'Dead Synthy' is a classic example of when a placeholder name becomes the final track title - I'd say it sums the track up well!
It was the week leading up to my set with Sasha in Miami. He gave me a call to see if I wanted to collaborate on something to hopefully play in our set... He sent over the initial draft called 'Dead Synthy' and I was drawn to the atmosphere, chords, vocal and arpeggio. I got to work, found the main riff, bassline, drums and soon had a first draft that we could test out. Sasha said my riff sounded a bit 'Jam & Spoon'... I'm ashamed to say I hadn't heard of Jam & Spoon at the time... no idea how I missed them - I think he was referring to their track 'Stella' (Banger). I wondered if that was a dealbreaker on the collab but we rolled with it! I sent the stems back to Sasha, he beefed up the mix, continued crafting the idea and it was super close when he sent it back. I especially love the breaks in the breakdown - The processing is mental and really adds something unique to the journey of the track!
Needless to say it is very surreal to have worked with such a legend as Sasha! I hope there is more to come!

āAriaā is my hybrid-live show tour concept. It has created a special opportunity for me to perform on stage with vocalists that Iāve collaborated with and this has, in turn, brought a whole new dimension to the way we can experience the music. The āAria EPā showcases key themes heard in the Aria set. Youāve got the deeper, tribal themes in āAscensionā, darker, harder hitting themes in āMercyā, feel good vibes in āHopeā and of course the big, peak moments when we can sing along - āRabbit Holeā.
āMercyā is definitely on the darker side of what Iāve written recently. I had been working on a completely different project and accidentally found myself jamming the main riff. I had to pause the track I was working on, jump on to the fresh idea and craft it into being! I had a pretty clear vision for how I wanted the whole project to sound so it was quite straightforward to finish the idea. The final piece to the puzzle was the buzzing saw bass. This is a sound that Iāve not heard a lot in recent years. It was super popular and inspiring to me around 2008 in a lot of electro house records and Iāve been looking for a way to utilize this sound it in a record for a while now. I love the way it comes out of nowhere and hits you in the face, elevating and driving the record forward!
āHopeā instills this feeling inside me that everything will be okay. I think a big reason for this feeling comes from the sustained drone that grows throughout the record. Itās a warm, fuzzy, unchanging sound that is like an anchor to the narrative of the track. Then youāve got the organ riff which feels so childlike and innocent, especially when paired with the womp bass. The tune gives me this funny snapshot of my life experience. I stumble along, doing the best I can through lifeās many ups and downs but no matter what, I find peace and hope in a firm foundation - friendship with my creator, my shelter in the storm!
Iāve shared more extensive notes on āRabbit Holeā and āAscensionā previously if youāre interested to read!
You can catch all 4 tracks from the EP during the premiere of my next live stream, recorded from the rooftop of the beautiful Hotel Californian rooftop, Santa Barbara. Iām a massive fan of Volen Sentir so I was thrilled when they sent over some ideas for a potential collab!
The boys sent me three drafts and I was captivated by all three! I suggested we combined two of the ideas to make one track, they sent the stems and I got to work. It was one of those projects that I shouldnāt have been doing at the time as I had a list of other projects to complete and deadlines to meet but the inspiration was too strong - I had to run with it and get lost in the flow!
The initial draft was super atmospheric with a beautiful chord progression, tribal bassline and incredible drums - I honestly think Volen Sentir are some of the best in the game for drums and grooves. I got to work on a main melody, tweaked the bassline and started arranging the track! As always, I came to a crossroads on the direction of the track and ended up making three versions. VS loved version one best so I went with that!
As we raced towards the release deadline, we sent the stems back and forth and jumped on lots of phone calls. Itās been a hectic touring season and Iāve definitely felt like Iāve been on the backfoot in the studio in between tour stops but Iām proud of where this one ended up.
Weāre super happy with the result, it has been getting such a good result in our sets. We hope that you love it!
ā¦I mentioned there was three ideas that I loved in Volen Sentirās initial demo playlist⦠stay tuned! š

āRabbit Holeā has been on quite the journey since its first draft in February 2023, including on an epic trip around the Welsh Highlands on a steam train! Many of you will be familiar with early versions of the track from the train stream or from me playing it during my London Aria set, but after many twists and turns we finally arrived at a definitive version, featuring vocals from the incredible Jodie Knight aka ALLKNIGHT. As soon as Jodie sent me the demo vocal I was completely hooked and I knew this was where the track was meant to be, and I couldn't be more excited about this release!
Something that has been really special about āRabbit Holeā is that it is still so fresh for Jodie and I.Ā Weāre so often used to sitting on tracks for months, sometimes even years before they get released and the initial excitement can begin to fade a little! - Not the case with this one! It came around so last minute that itās still super fresh for us and weāre both so stoked about it! Jodie and I have also been able to perform the record, on the āAriaā tour. It has certainly been a highlight in the set for both of us - people seem to have been singing along to it like they already know the words which is crazy to me - I know that for 99% of the people hearing it, itās their first listenā¦! Make that make sense!!
I hope 'Rabbit Hole' brings as much joy to you as it does to us!

āCome Togetherā was a pivotal moment in mine and āŖ@NoxVahn⬠'s musical journey. The first time I heard Dannyās draft of āCome Togetherā it actually sounded very similar to this new ambient mix. The idea still fills me with so much inspiration. I sent back my version with the added groove, bassline and extra lead melodies but the track always worked so well in an ambient, reflective format. When āŖ@anjunadeep⬠approached us to create this stripped back mix it was a no brainer. Weāve re-told the story of the original, bringing back all the main themes and motifs but this time in a purely meditative and cinematic direction.

I feel quite emotional watching this one. This scenery and, believe it or not, the railway has been a core part of my upbringing. The Marshall side of my family are mad about the railway. I spent a lot of my childhood driving around the UK with Dad trainspotting⦠My Grandad (John Marshall) is the author of many railway books. My Uncle drove steam engines on the Severn Valley railway and has the most epic model railway in his house! My Dad also spent a large part of his career working for Southern Railway as the greatest conductor in the world.
My family spent almost every summer holiday (vacation) in the UK countryside. We had holidays in Wales, Scotland, Lake District, Cornwall, Whitby, Norfolk etc. I spent hours and hours gazing at similarly beautiful scenery out of the car window, many train windows and I always had dance music playing in my headphones. This was a formational time for me musically. My love for dance music (Trance at the time) was cemented in place. For me personally, music is given a whole new depth and dimension when paired with beautiful scenery.
This was one heck of a farfetched idea for a stream. Iām pinching myself as I write this, laughing that we actually made this happen. A stream, on a steam train, traveling through some of the most stunning scenery in north Wales⦠I often get these wild ideas. I always pitch them to my wonderful team but boy was this one a long shot!
We had planned to shoot this one in October 2023. I flew to London, we all travelled up to north Wales. We had the carriage in the train booked, AirBnb⦠everything lined up for the shoot but on the day we were hit with torrential rain. We went out, we had all the cameras setup, I recorded the mix but the footage was covered in water, we couldnāt fly the drone and whilst we could have possibly put something out I made a tough decision to cancel and postpone the stream. I was absolutely gutted but I knew that this one had to be perfect. In hindsight, I think Sam (videographer) and I also realized that this was a bigger project than we had initially predicted so we saw this failed trip as an expensive (very) recky to perfect it for the next time around!
Thereās so much more to say about this one but Iāll leave it with this: Iām incredibly proud of this one. In my biased opinion, the music is packed full of emotion, soul and is perfect to accompany the journey. Iāve previewed some new music in the works, premiered my latest single āFloodlightsā (which is out now) and as always played some of my favourite current and recent-past music. Itās almost a three hour mix! I also want to say a BIG thank you to Mum, Dad, Jon and Lowri who all came along to both attempts of this stream and who filled me with so much joy and laughter in the carriage as we were riding along. Thank you Kelly, Jack, Sinead and Amina for listening to my crazy ideas and setting this project up! Thank you Ffestiniog railway for having me and trusting me to host a rave in your back carriage⦠And most of all, a HUGE thank you to Sam and Emma for some of their best work yet! These guys are some of the absolute best people Iāve met on this career journey. Their attention to detail and perfection in their craft is second to none. Theyāre also some of the loveliest friends to have with me fulfilling these crazy ideas! Love you all ā¤ļø

āFloodlightsā makes me think of light piercing through dark, foggy forests. I first debuted the track in my Kew Gardens mix and it has been the most replayed moment of the set! The idea started out with an ambient, fuzzy chord progression. Then I got jamming with the iconic DX7 Solid Bass patch (that Myon Muzik very kindly shared with me) and quickly found the bass riff. Next up came the vocal. I fell in love with the angelic, choral vibes which sounded so unique to me and added such a special hook to the record! It all came together really quickly and has been a joy to have in my most recent sets!
