P:

Q:
One question: taking the theosophical notion of seven bodies (physical, vital, astral, inferior mental, superior mental, buddi and atman), I understood that PB considers the physical, vital, astral and both mental bodies as Ego. But the question is: would buddhi be a component of the Higher Self or the Ego?

A:
Thank you for writing. This is a very good question. PB was of course aware of the Theosophical and other systems which propose seven bodies. He did not go into this amount of detail in his system because he wanted to present a basic introduction to the idea of the higher self. He once said, ‘The concept of the Overself was not intended for fine Advaitic distinctions.’ So he does not address this in his writings. We would agree with you that PB’s concept of the ego includes the four lower bodies. Regarding Buddhi, or intuition, we would say that it depends on how developed the intuition is – if it is mature, developed and reliable then we would agree that it belongs as ‘a component of the Higher Self.’ We hope that this answer is helpful and also that we have explained why it may be difficult to map PB’s more simple system onto one that is more complex.

R:
