Hey folks. Two weeks ago our dirt work guy had a pin on the excavator break and a hydraulic line under the floorboard of his dozer break within a couple of hours. That sucks for obvious reasons but also because immediately after we had 2 weeks of no rain. Big delay in our timeline, but that's typical of any heavy equipment operation. He was able to get back to the property and start clearing again yesterday. So that's the cause for delay in any updates.

On another note, I'd like to do a big Q&A video to address common comments and questions. If you have any questions to add please do so here. Thanks and have a great day!

Wowza! Add me to the list of people who say a grapple is a game changer on a tractor. Recording a bunch of head strap gopro video while testing this out today.

If anyone is in need of a great table saw or miter saw blade, I've had great results with these. They're good blades without breaking the bank. And they are on sale.

Not a sponsored or requested post, but this is an affiliate link. Just an honest recommendation.

Being on camera doesn't bother me, obviously. But taking pictures always makes me feel awkward. Too staged. I like to flow.

This tree is about average for the bigger ones I'm harvesting. It's pine that was purposefully planted years ago for future harvesting. So I'm living in the future right now :)

This one had 34 growth rings. It will be interesting to count the smaller diameter trees and see the same number of rings packed closer together. They should all be the same age.

I will be stacking these out of the way while we clear the 2 acres. I understand that there will be some insect damage or rot before I can get to milling them, so I likely won't have 100% yield with these logs. I'm trying to get that ball rolling asap but I've simply got a lot of irons in the fire right now.

A few pics from the property. Expanding the east side perimeter trail. Weather has been killing our timeline. We keep getting one or two days of slow and steady rain that saturates everything creating mud everywhere. Day one and two of sunshine and good weather are still too muddy to work. Then day three and possibly day four are very productive. Then the a few days of rain again to repeat the cycle. Frustrating, but somewhat expected, honestly. Clearing a little bit here and there, allowing the sun and wind to make its way to the ground, is helping a lot.

That said, our greatest asset is time. We don't have a huge pile of cash to speed things along by buying or renting an excavator or skid steer and forestry mulcher. We have a budget to be disciplined with to get our shop built and camper in it before winter.

So we're chugging along with sweat equity and working hard with what we have. We're trying various methods for clearing and cleaning and learning a ton. So far, we've spent a few sweat-drenched days with a chain saw and a pole saw, then added a wood chipper, then a borrowed rotary cutter, then I installed a Piranha bar on the tractor bucket (game changer), then we started burning a bit (especially uprooted stumps), and today we started grinding stumps. Each method gives different results and this one trail is educating us as to which method would be practical in various other parts of the property. We have other implements and methods planned in our future but, again, being disciplined with our budget is what will keep this train on track.

It's easy to say just buy "XYZ" machine and be done in no time but that's really not the goal anyway. This is our forever property and I don't think we will ever reach the "end" of stuff to do, which was the goal. Living this adventure and creating the life we want. I want the shop done yesterday but I don't want to rush the experience.

I'll have the shop up and running in the next few months and will be incorporating in-shop woodworking once again. Until then, I'll keep pinching myself to make sure this exciting stage of my life isn't a dream.

Onward!

How old do you think these are? I cannot fathom the amount of work and machinery required to get these out of the woods, let alone saw them into slabs or lumber. I'd never cut something this big unless it's 100% showing signs of dying or if it gets blown over by a storm. Holy smokes, these are big. There are many of these huge trees by the creek on our property. Every time I see them, they require a double take and pause.

Hey folks. I have a video ready and a ton of footage to edit for the next several videos about our move. Everything is delayed right now because we've been forced to use every non rainy day to move and now I'm working off of LTE cell Internet. I'll publish as soon as I can calm the moving chaos and mooch Internet from family. Thanks for your patience and I'll talk to ya soon!
