I recently got the same bike ,a 2002 Yz85 for my 11 yr old son, and a 99 Yz400f for me (Dad). The Yz400f is just fine for trails. I put a bigger sprocket in the back , thats it! Ready to fly! That bad boy will climb almost straight up at low speeds. Ok, not straight up, I just feels that way .Especially for an old man with little experience.

The YZ is designed to win Motocross races. First gear is quite high, low end is nonexistent and it has a huge hit right above mid range. It would be a terrible trail bike in stock trim. If you have about a grand to spend it can be made into an awesome off road bike with really good low end and hill climbing ability.

It does sound like ignition. If it spits in the carb, usually fuel related. Spit in the pipe, ign. Vote for ignition issues, but eliminate all the easy stuff first. Air filter off, gas cap off, blow back through the fuel line to make sure it is clean into the tank.
