The SQ1 is birch but more amped up vs the Recording Custom kit. The SQ1 toms are very clear and precise, the note snaps out of the shell (as do most Sonor toms). The sustain is much greater (to my ears) then the RC toms. The toms are a joy to play, the sticks snap right back and the shells will not choke.

Hey todd, you basically comfirmed my decision on SQ1. Im goin back to birch. Had yamaha absolute birch and nvpever should have sold them. probably going with the 20,10,12,14 configuration. I'll wait to hear if the colors will change. not sure why sonor picked those colors, but black would be my pick.
