my biggest tip for reading the iliad is know what information is relevant to your first read and what is essentially extra padding. there's a lot of stuff in the iliad that's cool once you're more familiar with greek myth, but on your first read isn't really relevant. so don't get caught up on every name, every myth referenced, etc

One thing I like to do when reading the Iliad is to act out the deaths. So say for example someone gets speared in the chest, pretend that you yourself have just been hit in the chest with a spear.
