Dry brush. Dip the brush in some paint and dry the brush. Either absorb the excess moisture with a paper towel, or use the excess paint for some other details first. Once the brush is dry but still has pigment left on it, rub it over the paper to create texture.

Step 7 - Add details. Keep adding details until you feel happy with the outcome. If you make a mistake, that's ok, and is part of the process! Add Gum Arabic to diluted paints. If you have considerably watered down some of your gouache colors, add a few drops of Gum Arabic to the paint and mix with a brush. Gum Arabic binds the gouache color to the paper so that the pigment doesn't wipe away after the water has evaporated. 3. Lightly draw your design.

This is more tricky but there are a couple ways that work for me. One is to start with a very diluted layer, like watercolor. Then wait until it dries before adding another slightly thicker layer. Keep letting the layers dry between, and use less and less water until you reach your final which will be pure gouache.

Gouache is perfect for beginners: it's easy to mix, blend, and paint but it is also a very forgiving medium. It is safer than acrylics and colors are opaque and vivid. Perfect for illustrations, sketches and landscapes. Some gouache wall art I made in 30 minutes.

To dry brush with gouache, add a small amount of gouache to the tip of your paint, and use a piece of tissue or scrap paper to remove any excess paint. You want just a little bit of paint on the paintbrush so that you can move the brush over the canvas to achieve a light, feathered effect on your painting.

To use gouache paint, you'll need the paint, paint brushes, a mixing tray, and a surface on which to paint. You simply mix a bit of the paint with some water in the mixing tray to achieve your desired consistency. If you mix in more water, you'll almost get a watercolor effect (although unlike watercolor, the gouache will remain opaque).

A great tip for gouache beginners is the 'fat over lean' method. This technique suggests applying thicker layers of paint over thinner ones. Start by painting a thin, diluted layer of gouache, and once this base is dry, add thicker, more opaque layers on top. This method prevents the paint from cracking and promotes a stable structure in

Getting started with gouache is fairly simple — you just need paints, paint brushes, paper, and a mixing tray. Gouache paint: There are lots of brands of gouache paint available. It's a good idea to begin with a few primary colors, plus tubes of black and white, so you can mix a range of hues.

Use water. Unlike acrylics, gouache is not afraid of water. A paintbrush dipped in water will create nice smooth opaque layers. To make washes or imitate watercolor, gradually mix water into your paint. If you feel like there is already too much water, you can always add some binding agent to the paint.

Gouache is used to its full capacity in this painting, which features a watered-down gouache backdrop, but then takes advantage of the opacity of the medium to paint the dog on top.
