Personally, I didn't see much of a negative side. I would definitely say that EarthBound is the most lighthearted game in the series, although I couldn't help but laugh at Mother 3's dark aspects myself. The Giygas battle wasn't about the horror, but about Itoi's quest to gain innocence after he saw what he thought was a violent rape.
