Current Status of Railway. 2011: Carrizo Gorge Railway, Inc (CZRY) discontinued operations of the Tijuana-Tecate segment in 2011. 2012: The SD&AE entered into a 50 year operating lease with the Pacific Imperial Railroad company for freight trains. With this lease, the operating rights of CZRY ended. 2013: They are trying to get the trains back in operation.

Our plan was to hike to a few of the tunnels along the Carrizo Gorge Railway and hopefully at least catch a glimpse of the famous Goat Canyon Trestle. One of the tunnels on the Carrizo Gorge Railway. While we have hiked to Goat Canyon Trestle from various routes, the initial view of the 600′ long, 200′ high trestle never fails to disappoint.

Today, the Carrizo Gorge railroad is often hiked because of the numerous abandoned sets of train cars, which make for amazing photography. The hike there is difficult, and I highly recommend attempting it in the winter with a fairly large group, at least four people, with plenty of supplies, and 24-hour gear.

In 2004 the Carrizo Gorge Railway company reopened the tracks for daily freight operations. There is an eleven-mile stretch of the railroad the follows Carrizo Gorge between Jacumba and the desert floor near Ocotillo. There are 16 major tunnels and 21 trestles including the one across Goat Canyon.
