A radial tire on a manual trans car will lead to destruction of rear end components mainly for the reasons mentioned. Wheel hop is #1. A bias ply tire will absorb the shock of the launch much better because the sidewall is less stiff. Most auto's don't hit the tires as hard so chances of spinning/unloading are less.

I could never get consistant launchs with DR's, many 2.0s and 1.9s, 1.8 if I got lucky, best was 1.7. 275-50-15 that looked huge. with et street slicks 26 x 10 or 9, looked small almost like stock tire it would low 1.6 all day long, damn near the same 60s without even a burnout, in street situations.
