The reason why you should not drive slow in the left lane is because most exits are to the right. So, if someone is in the left lane in front of you and they switch to the right lanes to exit, they may crash into the cars you are FORCING to pass you in said right lane (since you are blocking the passing lane).

Staying in the slow lane the entire drive is for sure the fastest way to go. Sometimes I try to have fun and shave seconds off by getting into the 2nd right most lane just before an on-ramp and then back over into the slow lane right before an off-ramp, just to see if the gamble pays off.
