There are fewer places an exploring player can find glitches. We could also say that the introduction of heavy RPG elements to the genre has split it somewhat. I think the reason why people disliked COD's move into arcadeyness is that adults mostly want their games to take themselves at least a little seriously. There are plenty of old school shooters that do that. Quake's overall artstyle is much gloomier and more serious than Doom's. So in that sense I think this is something of a false dichotomy.
