Chief KEEF. IMO the defining quality of Midwestern rap is the work ethic of the artist. Saba, Mick Jenkins, Smino, early Kanye, Lupe, Milo (indie rapper), Chance, and Danny Brown are all defined by the effort they put into their craft (especially as they enter the industry).

I've grown up in the midwest my whole life, but I often get the impression that people don't like it that much. It's not like I have a chip on my shoulder, but it seems like the midwest, overall is maligned more than other regions. We're the "rust belt", boring, with bumpkin-ish people, the land is boring etc

Most people think of the Midwest as flat, landlocked, and boring; but this is not true. We have several mountain ranges, including the Appalachians in Ohio, the Porcupines (Porkies) in Michigan, the Ozarks in Missouri, and the Black Hills in South Dakota. We also have more coastline than the west or east coast, with the great lakes.

The Midwest is a great place to live but I wouldn't want to visit. Pretty much all the stuff you want in your day to day life is there. You have museums - maybe not world-class but still educational and enjoyable. You have theme parks, zoos, forested areas for getting out in nature, shows, stores, pretty much anything.

Performing these lyrics at Glastonbury festival in 2019, the first black British solo artist to headline on the Pyramid stage, triggered the ironic comment from Michael Gove: "he is a far, far better rapper than he is a political analyst". Gove's biggest oversight here was assuming the two to be mutually exclusive.

But think about what the Midwest looked like in 1950, 60, or 70 vs the South, then think about it today and it's night and day. The Midwest may still be endowed with better educational and cultural institutions than the South, but we can see where the trends are going. Keep in mind that those things are lagging indicators.
