Story wise, I think 4 was a good jumping off point for the new characters. It established the new main characters as well as the new threat, but then 5 just completely shat the bed. Kaits locust connection was supposed to be a major plot but it was wrapped up in a mere two acts. Then there isn't really any story progression.

Speaking strictly from a campaign perspective as I've never played a second of multiplayer, it just felt like filler to me. Baird works better as a supporting character and the new characters were kind of whatever IMO. Paduk is retroactively improved a little through the epilogue part and Gears 5 but he was nothing special.

Actually has Gore, and somehow still has relatively comparable graphics when you look at its age. Gears 5 gore is just horrible. They ruined the players vs players part by gameplay manipulation. Technically gears five is the most impressive unreal four engine game made, it's visually beautiful and stable.

I thought the story was pretty good. Easily better than the story in Gears 1-4. All the bugs going on right now suck. I collected a lot more collectibles than what the game recorded. Gears 4 went too safe in its narrative and characters, but it's levels and enemies were varied and fun. gears 5 was awful. Pretty much every game is guilty of padding these days, but i can't recall another game whose in-game dialogue outright tells you that the game is stopping so that you can explore a barren open world and activate three padding beacons.

As a third person cover shooter it isn't good. The ally AI is suicidal, the cover system is clunky beyond belief, making Marcus do other than what you want him to, and the aiming system sucks balls big time. On the harder difficulties, the devs should have at least included hard lock, soft lock and free aim options.
