You are just not looking hard enough. Comicbooks are not just what Marvel and DC publish. There are other publishers you could look at.

That's basically the argument usually. Manga much more commonly has one shot stories so they're usually a little easier to recommend (unless they've been running for like hundreds of chapters) whereas a lot of the time with comics you usually have to do a lot of cherry picking of individual stories and specific runs which can get confusing to the average person who aren't used to that
