Question is, how did Japan become the highest standard for wrestling and why are they all so good? Because Dave Meltzer likes them. As the 1 of the oldest dirtsheet writers, man gets a lot of credibility from people. So they give his opinion more weigh than it should have on completely subjective matters, like what makes a Wrestling match good.

I wanted to pass on the interview that Chris Van Vliet did with Dave Meltzer on INSIGHT With Chris Van Vliet. Dave Meltzer actually broke his five-star rating system to accommodate the excellent action. He has since rated ten NJPW matches as 5.75 stars and above. 10 Tetsuya Naito Vs. Kenny Omega - 5.75 Stars (G1 Climax 2017 - Day 19) Two of New Japan's best in the past few years pulled out all the stops in the 2017 G1 Climax.

The main trend here is clearly that Dave Meltzer has a lot less time for Toru Yano's schtick than the general public, at least in terms of how it impacts on match quality. Dave gave his match with Kenta a -1. and the 18 second disaster against Goto a 0, whereas Grappl users were kind enough to at least give a positive number.

Hell, since AEW started, Meltzer has given 27 NJPW matches the 5* or greater rating. For AEW in the same timeframe, it's been 6. Not a sign of his bias ever shifting in favour of one and against the other. His perceived Japanese bias left Japan to form AEW is what happened.

A Danielson segment will often feel like 2006 ROH. A Kenny segment will often feel like New Japan. There will be sprinkles of WWE because a lot of what they do works. AEW will only stunt themselves if they decide to offer one style of wrestling all of the time - but it doesn't seem like they want to trap themselves in that box.

It's his opinion just as your opinion is your own. You call Meltzer biased, and while he has his preferences, he doesn't complain about enjoying wrestling in other places. He's the guy that can enjoy flippy shit as much as an old school match. He can enjoy a finisher fest as much as a match with one finisher.
