Location: Baltimore, MD. I voted for Cream's "I'm So Glad", but I really like their live version of the song on the "Goodbye" LP, where the band gets to show off their improvisational skills. Ed Hurdle. HeavyDistortion. HeavyDistortion, Jul 17, 2012. #12.

"I'm So Glad" is a Delta blues-style song originally recorded by American musician Skip James in 1931. Blues historian Gerard Herzhaft notes "This spiritual probably dates back to the beginning of the blues". Blues writer Stephen Calt describes it as "a Two-Step piece marked by fiendishly fast playing [in] an eight bar arrangement comprised of single measures."

Probably the most famous song by the Delta Blues singer Skip James, this song showcases his fingerpicking guitar skills, something that would influence a number of guitarists, including Eric Clapton, who recorded this song with his band Cream on their first album Fresh Cream. One further note about Skip James. His "I'm So Glad" was part of a huge hit rock LP by The Cream during the 60's. Clapton seems like a good guy. It's notable that when Cream covered "Rolling and Tumbling" in '66, they credited it to Muddy Waters, and when they covered "Crossroads" in '68, they credited it to Robert Johnson, unlike many of their peers, then and now, who should have shown the same class, but instead went either the "trad. arr. by" or "I wrote this" route.

Skip James, who modestly liked to call himself 'one of the best men who ever walked', didn't think much of Cream's version of I'm So Glad, lambasting it on his death-bed. 'They got it ass backwards,' he said. 'They don't have the harmony, the rhythm. I doubled up on it. It's too good a song to mess up like that.

This CD release has been digitally remastered from earlier Document issues, and for the most part it's a real gem. These early recordings of Skip James, one of the most important delta bluesmen, are a cornerstone of blues history, and it's good to have them back in such fine shape. It's a little like cleaning the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
